The exhibition 鈥淎bstracting Nature鈥 at the Albuquerque Museum includes nine women artists and one male artist. Six of the ten are absolutely amazing. It鈥檚 refreshing to see an almost all-woman show that doesn鈥檛 essentialize gender or even put gender front and center. A mark of progress, for sure. Unfortunately, the curatorial framework has other flaws.

Last week, I reviewed the exhibition 鈥淟ight, Space, and the Shape of Time,鈥 currently on view at the Albuquerque Museum. Sarah Bennett-Davidson鈥檚 immersive video installation 鈥淚nterference鈥 at Bingo Art Studios and Gallery is the perfect complement to that show. It鈥檚 an example of how the ideas of the Light and Space movement remain salient for emerging artists, even when some of them, like Bennett-Davidson, have disabused themselves of the so-called 鈥渇inish fetish鈥 aesthetic.

The Albuquerque Museum鈥檚 鈥淟ight, Space, and the Shape of Time,鈥 takes an art movement associated with the clean lines and shiny surfaces of postwar Los Angeles architecture and turns it inside-out, showing how generations of Light and Space-inspired artists, including women and Indigenous artists, have used this seemingly cold, prefab language to communicate personal and historical truths.
