‘Consistent and sustainable’: American Society of Radiologic Technologists ranks No. 2 small firm in Top Workplaces
The world’s oldest and largest association representing medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals, based in Albuquerque, attributes its award-winning workplace culture to its open-door policy for employee feedback that fosters a collaborative culture across all departments.
With over 156,000 members across the country, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, or ASRT, advances medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals to enhance quality and safe patient care.
The organization is the No. 2 small company in Top Workplaces, the second time it has made the list.
In addition to radiologic technologists, ASRT’s staff spans marketing, graphic design, online learning, research and government relations. CEO Melissa Pergola said she is proud to be a leader at the organization, where members remain curious and approach challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset.
The following is an excerpt from an interview with Pergola. It has been edited and condensed for clarity.
ASRT has been named a Top Workplace for the second year in a row. What does this say about the company’s culture and trajectory?
Being recognized as a Top Workplace for a second consecutive year, based entirely on anonymous employee feedback, is incredibly meaningful. It tells us that ASRT’s culture is not only strong, but also consistent and sustainable. This recognition reflects a workplace where people feel valued, supported and connected to the mission. It also speaks to our trajectory. We are continuing to evolve in a way that prioritizes our people, invests in their growth, and builds a culture of trust and accountability. When employees choose to share that their experience is positive, it reinforces that we are moving in the right direction together.
A survey respondent said the work-life balance at ASRT is “the very best I have ever experienced in any job.” How does the organization achieve this standard?
We are very intentional about designing a workplace that respects the whole person. Work-life balance doesn’t happen by accident; it is the result of listening to employees to build thoughtful policies and a culture of trust. At ASRT, we offer flexible and hybrid work schedules, generous paid time off and family-friendly benefits that allow employees to take care of their responsibilities both at work and at home. Just as important, we empower our staff to manage their work in a way that meets both organizational goals and personal needs. Our employees consistently share that they feel trusted, supported and encouraged to bring their full selves to work, and that makes all the difference.
What sets ASRT apart from other radiologic science organizations?
What truly sets ASRT apart is the combination of our mission and our people. We are deeply committed to advancing the medical imaging and radiation therapy profession, and our employees feel a strong sense of purpose in that work. Internally, we have built a culture that prioritizes collaboration, transparency and innovation. Employees are encouraged to share ideas, take initiative and contribute to meaningful work that has a direct impact on patient care and the future of the profession.
A couple of surveyed employees mentioned their satisfaction with remote work. How does management ensure remote employees are included in decision-making?
Inclusion is intentional, especially in a hybrid and remote environment. We leverage multiple communication channels —virtual meetings, cross-functional collaboration and regular organizational updates — to make sure all voices are heard. In addition, Albuquerque staff and remote staff participate in regular all-staff meetings to ensure everyone is aligned with the organization's mission and vision. Our leadership approach emphasizes transparency and accessibility, and we actively create opportunities for input, whether employees are onsite or remote. When we have an onsite event, we send remote employees special packages related to the event and we are being more intentional about creating connection days dedicated to building strong teams.
You have been at ASRT since 2021. How would you describe the evolution of ASRT’s work environment under your current leadership as CEO?
Since joining ASRT, my focus has been on strengthening trust, enhancing transparency and ensuring that our culture reflects our values. We have evolved into an organization where employees feel empowered to contribute ideas, where communication is open and where there is a strong sense of shared purpose. It has been important to me to create opportunities for staff to share feedback and to see that feedback reflected in action. What I am most proud of is that our culture is something we have built together. The Top Workplace recognition is a direct reflection of our employees’ voices and the collective effort to create an environment where people feel supported and inspired.
