OPINION: The places that depend on power teach you what matters

For 25 years, one principle has guided Bloom Energy's work: We build technology that we would be comfortable having in our own communities.

That standard sounds simple. In practice, it means something very specific. Our technology must not only be reliable. It must be something we would trust near our schools, hospitals, businesses and in our neighborhoods.

Across the country, that is exactly where Bloom's technology operates today. When people think about energy infrastructure, they often picture power plants located far from the communities they serve. Our experience has been different. We have spent more than two decades providing electricity where it is needed most: at hospitals, universities, manufacturers, grocery stores, health clinics and community facilities. The places that depend on power every minute of every day.

At Stamford Hospital in Connecticut, our systems provide continuous onsite power that helps support patient care. At Caltech in California, Bloom systems have operated continuously since 2009. And following severe storms in Connecticut, Bloom-powered microgrids helped keep critical community resources available, including schools, hospitals, college campuses, large retailers and more. 

These experiences shape how we think about every project.

Today, communities across America are being asked to support the infrastructure for rapid growth in data, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. These investments can strengthen local economies. They also bring understandable questions about how projects will affect local resources and quality of life.

As communities evaluate new infrastructure projects, they should expect clear information about the technologies involved and what those technologies mean to daily life. In our experience, people want practical answers. How much water is used? What will it sound like? What will the air impacts be? 

Those conversations matter. Fuel cells have emerged as an important power solution because they can deliver reliable electricity with significantly lower air emissions, minimal water use and quiet operation compared with conventional combustion-based generation. Why? Because they were designed to generate electricity through an electrochemical process rather than combustion. 

Project Jupiter reflects those advantages. Compared with the previously proposed gas-turbine design, Bloom's fuel cell technology is expected to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by approximately 92% while also substantially reducing sulfur oxides, particulate matter and carbon emissions. The systems use minimal water and generate power directly at the site where it is needed.

Those benefits matter. So does reliability. Hospitals, schools, businesses and other critical facilities all depend on electricity being available when it is needed most.

That is why we take pride in the fact that Bloom fuel cells have served customers through more than 1,700 grid outages over the past five years, including disruptions caused by storms, wildfires and earthquakes. It is why our systems operate at more than 1,000 locations around the world. And it is why we believe infrastructure should ultimately be judged by how consistently it serves the people who depend on it.

As projects move forward in places like Do帽a Ana County, conversations about economic growth, environmental stewardship and energy reliability will continue. They should.

Communities deserve solutions that improve upon what came before. They deserve partners who listen and who stand behind their commitments long after construction is complete.

The hospitals, schools, businesses and community institutions we have served over the years have taught us that trust is earned. That is the standard we strive to meet everywhere we operate, and it is the standard we will bring to Do帽a Ana County.
