Bernalillo County jail mistakenly releases another inmate

Published Modified

The Metropolitan Detention Center mistakenly released an inmate for the second time in less than a month.

MDC spokeswoman Candace Hopkins said 鈥渉uman error鈥 led the man to be released on Wednesday. She would not identify the man but said he was booked on July 13 on domestic violence charges.

鈥淭he inmate had been ordered to a conditional release, which required him to be transferred to Pretrial Services before his release,鈥 Hopkins said. 鈥淭hat transfer was not completed prior to the release.鈥

She said jail staff called the man and let him know about the error.

鈥淗e, in turn, reported to Pretrial Services and fulfilled the remaining requirements of his release,鈥 Hopkins said.

It was the second such mistaken release this month.

On July 3, a 鈥渃lerical error鈥 led to the release of a man jailed on a drug charge. Hopkins said Friday that the man released in that incident is still loose.

鈥淎s a result of both incidents, an exhaustive review of releasing policies and procedures is now underway at the facility,鈥 she said. 鈥淓ffective immediately, a new protocol has been implemented mandating a second release check for all inmates being released from MDC.鈥

Hopkins said both incidents are still under investigation by MDC鈥檚 Office of Professional Standards.

鈥淥nce the investigation concludes, necessary policy adjustments will be implemented to enhance increased accuracy in the inmate release process,鈥 she said.
