Albuquerque sneakerheads answered that question in droves Friday 鈥� it鈥檚 Hatch green chile for the gold.
People started lining up at 6 a.m. outside a skate shop in Nob Hill to be among the first to take home Nike鈥檚 new Skateboarding Dunk Low Pros featuring a color palette of green, beige and yellow.
This Nike SB Dunk draws inspiration from the growth cycle of fiery little peppers 鈥� from mini and mild to mature and spicy, according to .
The shoes, which quickly got the street name 鈥淗atch Green Chile Dunk,鈥� went on sale Friday at Kingswell, 3407 Central NE, just in time for the peak of green chile season.
鈥淚 saw green chile, and I was like, 鈥極h my God, I need these,鈥欌�� said Forest Long, who had been in the line since 11 a.m., when the store opened.
By noon, there were at least 30 people still in line to get the fiery sneakers.
鈥淲e鈥檙e the chile capital of the world, so might as well rock it with some Nike SBs,鈥� said Haley Nadine, an Albuquerque native who makes social media content about skateboarding sneakers.
The shoes, which retail for $130, went on sale to the general public on Nike鈥檚 website Friday night. But the only place to get them in person during the day Friday was at Kingswell.
鈥淔or people to take the time to come and support my business and the skateboard community, it is so rad,鈥� said DJ Chavez, owner of Kingswell. In addition to the shoes, the store was also selling other green chile-themed products, including T-shirts, hats and tote bags.
