When a cracked tooth or severe toothache strikes, Albuquerque residents will soon have a new place to turn.

Emergency Dental of America, a Nebraska-based dental network with 24 offices across 16 states, is launching its first New Mexico location in the Duke City this month. The office, dubbed Emergency Dental of Albuquerque, will open on Aug. 14 at 3900 Eubank NE, according to a news release from the company.

鈥淒ental emergencies don鈥檛 always happen during traditional office hours,鈥� said Dr. Roberto Monteagudo, the company鈥檚 co-owner and chief dental officer, in a statement. 鈥淏y opening in Albuquerque, we can give patients another option when they need to be evaluated quickly instead of waiting days or weeks for an appointment.鈥�

Tooth disorders were behind an annual average of nearly 2 million emergency room visits between 2020 and 2022, according to a from the National Center for Health Statistics. While emergency rooms can address urgent dental pain or infection, they often prescribe pain medication and cannot complete the dental treatment required to fix underlying issues, the Emergency Dental of America news release said.

Built around the idea that 鈥減atients in pain should not have to wait for a weekday appointment to receive answers,鈥� Emergency Dental of Albuquerque will offer walk-in evaluations, same-day emergency dental care and extended evening and weekend hours, the release said.

With digital X-rays and other scanning and imaging technology, the office will be able to treat everything from severe toothaches to broken or fractured teeth, dental abscesses, swollen jaws, knocked-out teeth, and lost fillings and crowns. The office will also use artificial intelligence tools to help its doctors take notes and review dental images.

Patients who need ongoing care will also be able to schedule appointments with Emergency Dental of Albuquerque for routine services, including cleanings, exams, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, dentures and implants. People can also walk in for these services, but patients with an emergency are prioritized, so appointments are recommended, a spokesperson said.

Emergency Dental of America decided to expand to Albuquerque because it presented 鈥渁 genuine unmet need鈥� with many people often having to wait weeks for the next available appointment at traditional dental offices, the spokesperson said.

The Albuquerque office will employ nine people, with plans to expand and create more jobs as business grows. Removing financial barriers to emergency treatment will also be a focus of the new office, which will work with most major dental insurance plans and will have financing plans available for those without coverage or with incomplete coverage.

The ultimate goal of the expansion is for the Albuquerque office to make same-day care accessible to more people, Monteagudo said in a statement to the Journal.

鈥淓very new community we serve represents another opportunity to help people when they鈥檙e often at one of the most stressful moments in their lives,鈥� Monteagudo said.

鈥淥ur hope is that families throughout Albuquerque will come to know us as a trusted resource, not only for emergencies, but for lifelong dental care,鈥� he added. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 simply want to open another office. We want to become part of the community by delivering compassionate care, earning trust one patient at a time, and making a meaningful difference in people鈥檚 lives.鈥�
