We鈥檙e calling it NFL Extra, and it starts this morning, exclusively in the Journal鈥檚 E-Edition.

The reason is pretty simple: We think our readers want it.

Passionate football fans care about their teams. In August, our Journal Poll asked New Mexicans about their favorite NFL teams. We wanted to know which teams people across the state were following, and their answers helped us decide where to focus NFL Extra.

The result: The Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders.

So those are the teams we鈥檙e focusing on the most in NFL Extra. Your favorite teams.

I鈥檝e been covering and editing NFL coverage for as long as I鈥檝e been a full-time journalist. It started with occasional reporting on Atlanta Falcons games as a sportswriter right out of college and continued for more than 20 years as a sportswriter and editor in places such as Miami, Phoenix, Seattle and Charlotte.

One of my favorite memories came at The Arizona Republic, where I helped coordinate our coverage of Super Bowl XXX in Tempe in January 1996.

The Dallas Cowboys beat the Pittsburgh Steelers that day to win their fifth Super Bowl.

Thirty years later, Cowboys fans are still waiting for No. 6.

Much of the additional NFL coverage you鈥檒l see in the Journal will come from The Associated Press. And I鈥檓 comfortable saying this: Nobody covers the NFL better than the AP.

Its reporters are in stadiums and locker rooms across the league every week, producing independent, on-the-ground journalism that even the television networks 鈥� despite spending billions of dollars for NFL broadcast rights 鈥� cannot match.

We鈥檙e going to take advantage of that coverage.

NFL Extra will give you more of the games, personalities and stories that matter across the league, while we continue to devote our own reporters and resources to the New Mexico sports stories only the Journal can cover.

To me, that鈥檚 what a newspaper should do: Own the local stories nobody else can, and bring readers the best available coverage of the national stories they care about.

That鈥檚 also why NFL Extra will live in the E-Edition. It gives us an opportunity to offer additional content that may not fit into the print newspaper while making our digital products more useful to readers.

And there鈥檚 one important thing to know: NFL Extra is available exclusively in the E-Edition, so you鈥檒l need to have your digital access activated to read it. If you鈥檙e a Journal subscriber, it鈥檚 available to you at no extra cost.

Today鈥檚 E-Edition is the first with coverage of the Cowboys and Raiders, who opened the season Sunday, and the Broncos, who play their first game Monday night.
