Kairos Power has big goals, and its employees feel a sense of purpose in helping the company achieve them.

That鈥檚 the kind of feedback that landed the nuclear energy engineering company the top spot within the large category in this year鈥檚 Top Workplaces 鈥� a recognition Kairos has previously earned five times.

Kairos, founded in 2016, is based in Alameda, California, but also has operations in Tennessee and New Mexico. The company first planted roots in the Land of Enchantment in 2020.

It鈥檚 since expanded its Albuquerque campus, which employs 185 New Mexicans and supports the company鈥檚 manufacturing capabilities. Kairos designs, engineers and manufactures advanced reactor technology to support the world鈥檚 transition to clean energy.

In a survey, Kairos鈥� New Mexico employees highlighted the company鈥檚 mission as a reason why they love their job, with several saying they felt fulfilled working toward a goal bigger than themselves. Many also said they find their work interesting, collaborative and responsibility-driven.

This year, employee feedback also earned the company a special Work/Life Flexibility Award. Kairos co-founder and CEO Mike Laufer said the feedback from his New Mexico employees is 鈥渋ncredibly validating.鈥�

The following is an excerpt from an email interview with Laufer. It has been edited and condensed for clarity.

What are some of the biggest principles or philosophies that influence how you lead Kairos鈥� New Mexico employees?

Because our Albuquerque campus is the company鈥檚 engine for rapid hardware development, we believe the best way to lead is to put the people closest to the technology in the driver鈥檚 seat. We empower our employees to take ownership of their day-to-day work. Our primary job as leaders is to clear roadblocks and ensure our team has the tools, resources and cross-functional support they need to be successful.

How important are your employees in helping shape Kairos and its mission?

Our employees are the driving force behind everything we do. I am incredibly proud of the team we have built at Kairos; our company could not have achieved everything we have in nine and a half years without their talent, grit and dedication. Everyone in the organization 鈥� from engineering to manufacturing to business operations 鈥� takes great pride in their work, tackling challenges head-on, learning from their experience and making steady progress toward our mission, day in and day out. That is what defines Kairos as a company.

What are the biggest challenges Kairos and the clean energy field are facing today, and how do you approach providing stability to employees during times of uncertainty?

The energy sector is currently navigating an unprecedented convergence of surging electricity demand and the retirement of aging infrastructure, creating a massive opportunity for advanced nuclear technologies to provide reliable, carbon-free baseload power and transform our energy landscape. Our approach to navigating these challenges is to maintain focus on our strategic roadmap, ensuring we prioritize predictable, incremental progress and establish the credibility to deliver for our customers. By bringing critical capabilities in-house and providing the organizational support our team needs to thrive, we insulate our employees from market volatility and provide the stability to execute our mission with confidence.

Kairos has once again been named a Top Workplace. What does this recognition mean to you, and what do you think sets your business apart in employee satisfaction and culture?

Being named a Top Workplace again for the fifth year in a row is a tremendous honor. This recognition is a testament to our amazing team and the company we have built together. Kairos Power brings together wildly capable people united by a singular, meaningful mission. We are not just building one reactor 鈥� we are building a company with the capabilities and expertise to deliver an entire fleet.
