Los Alamos, Sandia to work on AI projects for Trump’s Genesis Mission
DOE awards the labs a share of $5 billion to study fusion, nuclear fuel with AI
New Mexico’s national laboratories will help lead the Trump administration’s push to use artificial intelligence to speed up scientific discovery.
Los Alamos National Laboratory will lead seven Genesis Mission projects and Sandia National Laboratories will lead six, part of the first round of awards announced Wednesday by U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
The Genesis Mission is a $5 billion DOE program spanning national labs, universities and companies in all 50 states.
The department selected 278 projects out of what it called the “largest response” to any funding opportunity in the department’s history, betting that AI can help double the country’s scientific productivity in fields from fusion energy to nuclear materials at a moment when Washington views its AI edge over China as increasingly narrow.
At Sandia, that bet already shapes how research gets done day to day, said Kevin Dixon, director of its Applied Information Sciences Center, whose team provides AI support across the DOE and the National Nuclear Security Administration.
“When we can have scientists and people come up with ideas, we can use artificial intelligence to test those ideas,” Dixon said. “We can send them to a laboratory to automatically run experiments to test those ideas, to test new workflows. Are they better, more effective, more impactful? And that all goes in a closed-loop cycle. So the human is really just coming up with human innovations.”
Indeed, much of Sandia’s research focuses on the best use of AI for research itself.
One of Sandia’s Genesis projects is titled “A Foundation Model for Bayesian Scientific Reasoning,” led by Sandia researcher Tommie Catanach. The project will “develop an AI reasoning framework to help scientists design experiments, compare models and test scientific theories against evidence using Bayesian methods,” according to Sandia.
“Bayesian scientific reasoning” is how our beliefs evolve when new evidence emerges, Dixon explains.
Some of Sandia’s Genesis work is less theoretical, however.
Sandia is also leading projects that will use AI to accelerate the development of fusion materials to withstand extreme heat and radiation, a Wednesday announcement said. Another project uses AI to map out critical mineral resources.
Another project uses generative AI to improve our understanding of how clouds, precipitation and water systems interact.
Asked how Sandia is using AI to protect national security, Dixon wrote in an email that “national security means a lot of things,” including economic security and energy security. One of the Genesis projects “will be using AI to evaluate structural materials for fusion reactors and how to join them.”
“Even in small research reactors, these take a lot of punishment because they have to hold up in pretty extreme environments,” Dixon wrote. “This project will extend the life of these materials inside future reactors, which we hope will play an important part of our grid.”
The Genesis Mission, led by the DOE, is a “whole-of-government” approach, marshalling agencies to use AI to improve healthcare, energy, transportation and national security, the agency said.
The six projects LANL will lead for Genesis will use AI to research fusion energy, ocean ice, nuclear fuel and other topics, lab officials said Wednesday.
Geoffrey Fairchild, deputy director of LANL’s Security AI Office, said when you “trace back to the beginnings of artificial intelligence you’re going to see the national labs have had a very solid presence throughout.”
“The reason for that one of the things we are really known for is writing these really complex physics simulations — or just complex simulations in general,” Fairchild said.
In a statement, LANL Director Thom Mason said the selection for Genesis “reflects the exceptional talent of our researchers and the Laboratory’s leadership in high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and scientific discovery.”
“These investments will accelerate breakthroughs that advance national security, energy security and U.S. scientific competitiveness,” Mason said.
This is the first phase of the Genesis awards, the purpose of which is “to identify promising pathways toward transformative scientific capabilities and establish a foundation for future investment and scale,” LANL said.
