‘Meaningful work’ earns Koniag Government Services a No. 2 ranking among large Top Workplaces

For Ruben Duran, a New Mexico-based program and project manager for Koniag Government Services, the key to cultivating a place where people want to work is treating them like customers.

“I want them to be treated like they’re No. 1,” Duran said.

Part of Duran’s role entails overseeing a team of 41 New Mexicans who also work for KGS, which ranked No. 2 among this year’s Top Workplaces in the large company category.

The company, headquartered in Chantilly, Virginia, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Koniag Inc., which Congress established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act in 1971 to manage the land and assets of the Alutiiq community — Alaska natives who originated from the Kodiak Archipelago islands. KGS was later created to focus on serving Koniag’s federal government customers.

Today, KGS provides technological, professional and operational services to defense, civilian and healthcare agencies. The company currently has two contracts in the federal health sector in New Mexico.

KGS employees receive health, dental and vision insurance; three to six weeks of paid time off; comp time; tuition assistance; a commuter benefit program; and a 401(k) retirement plan with a company match, Duran said.

In an Energage survey, KGS’s New Mexico employees said the company seems to truly care about its employees and clients, earning KGS a special Appreciation Award out of all of this year’s Top Workplaces.

The following is an excerpt from an interview with Duran. It has been edited and condensed for clarity.

KGS has been named a Top Workplace. What does this recognition mean to you, and what do you think sets your company apart when it comes to employee satisfaction and culture?

I think with everything that we provide them — whether it’s the benefits package or the way that we manage the different contracts — it always gives employees the opportunity to grow and to learn. Whenever the executive leadership team comes into Albuquerque, they focus on the employees. When we go out to lunch or for dinner, the executives are not supposed to sit together. They all split up between the tables so that way they can interact with them. Because of the fact that we do those little things, they appreciate what we’ve done. I just had my performance appraisals with all my staff, and the feedback I get is that they love KGS. They like the way we manage the team. So, when they go and provide this feedback, it says that they really do like what we’re doing.

How would you describe the role your employees play in making Koniag what it is?

They’re kind of like the front line. They’re going out there and supporting the customer and providing the technology that they need for them to meet their business objectives. Our goal is for each employee to be our ambassador of the company, to represent Koniag and to provide exceptional customer service.

In your opinion, what is the key to attracting and retaining talent?

One of the things that we tell individuals when we do interviews is that we have some employees who have been with us on the same team for over 20 years. I have a couple that are actually at 30 years that have been on the team. We have individuals who have been here for a long time, and there’s a reason for that. It’s because they enjoy what they do. We also provide competitive compensation and benefits just right off the bat because we want to make sure that they’re compensated for the work they’re doing. We also try to maintain that customer-focused culture and provide opportunities for meaningful work and professional development.

What’s next for Koniag, and what message do you have for employees about the future?

(Last year, KGS’s) annual revenue was $850 million, and I know they want to get to $1 billion in the near future. When we start to grow like that, we can offer more benefits to the employee and to the customer because then we have more resources. So, for me, just seeing the company grow is great, and I know that Koniag is always looking to improve what they have. There are more doors that will open up.
