Alternative rock titans Everclear are coming to Albuquerque, and they鈥檙e letting their fans choose their setlist.

鈥淚'm excited about this tour coming up,鈥� Art Alexakis, lead singer-guitarist, said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 called the 鈥楲ucky 7 Tour,鈥� and that鈥檚 going to be a lot of fun, 鈥檆ause we鈥檙e doing seven requests in each market that fans have voted for.鈥�

Audiences can vote on or through social media.

鈥淚f people have any requests for that show, they can go on social media to either me or Freddy (Herrera) and request songs. And if we know them, we'll play them,鈥� Alexakis said.

The band usually opens with 鈥淪o Much for the Afterglow,鈥� the title track from their double-platinum 1997 album, and closes with 鈥淪anta Monica,鈥� a hit song from their second studio album, 鈥淪parkle and Fade.鈥� But they鈥檙e prepared to dig deep into their back catalog, too.

鈥淪ome people get deep sometimes, and that鈥檚 what this tour is about 鈥� learning some deeper songs. And we鈥檝e been working on that,鈥� Alexakis said. 鈥淏ut, yeah, we play all the hits and fan favorites, too. It鈥檚 a rock show.鈥�

Everclear will perform at Expo New Mexico鈥檚 Tingley Coliseum on Thursday, Sept. 17, as part of the New Mexico State Fair concert lineup. Alexakis said Everclear has played many state fairs in the past.

鈥淚t鈥檚 such big business for bands at every level. Maybe not the Foo Fighters, but even Stone Temple Pilots still play state fairs. And isn鈥檛 it great that they have rock 鈥檔鈥� roll at them? When I was a kid, it was always bands that I didn鈥檛 like,鈥� Alexakis said.

Alexakis has been surprised at the number of Gen Z and Gen Alpha fans who show up at their concerts.

鈥淲e鈥檙e getting, I鈥檇 say, 30% of the people coming to our hard-ticket, headlining shows 鈥� not fairs and stuff like that, but our full-on shows 鈥� I鈥檇 say 30% are kids. Late teens, early- to mid-20s. They weren鈥檛 even born when these songs were on the radio,鈥� he said.

Since these young fans are discovering Everclear online and through streaming services, Alexakis said, they are listening to all of the band鈥檚 music, not just the radio singles older fans know.

鈥淭hese kids who are glomming onto Everclear 鈥� dude, they鈥檙e singing every word to every song! And they鈥檙e not just singing the hits,鈥� Alexakis said. 鈥淏ecause, to them 鈥� they didn鈥檛 grow up with the hits, so they don鈥檛 really know what that is. They didn鈥檛 really grow up with the radio. 鈥� So, it鈥檚 a different mindset. But it鈥檚 cool that they have found a place inside of (the music), and I鈥檓 very grateful for that.鈥�

Everclear is working on a new album that has more of the raw punk and grunge elements of the band鈥檚 debut 1993 album, 鈥淲orld of Noise,鈥� Alexakis said.

鈥淚 think the record we鈥檙e working on now is closer to the stuff I was making back then. It鈥檚 loud, rowdy, political, a lot of feedback and a lot of fun to play,鈥� he said.

Nine songs have been recorded so far, but Alexakis said there is no rush to put it out before it is ready.

鈥淚鈥檝e got another five of six songs to record, and then we鈥檙e probably a year away from talking about it seriously,鈥� he said.

Before that, Everclear will mark the 30th anniversary of their album 鈥淪o Much for the Afterglow鈥� next year with a special release.

鈥淲e鈥檒l be releasing a 30^th anniversary double vinyl with the original record remastered and then a bunch of tracks from the vaults. So, that鈥檚 going to be cool,鈥� Alexakis said.

鈥淪o Much for the Afterglow鈥� featured the autobiographical song, 鈥淔ather of Mine,鈥� which became a Billboard Hot 100 hit. Alexakis said he wrote the song when his eldest daughter was 5.

鈥淥ne thing that sappy parents do is they鈥檒l watch their kids sleep at night when they鈥檙e little. It鈥檚 hard to explain, but it just feels magical,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 remember standing in the doorway, watching my daughter sleeping next to her mom, my second wife, and I was just like, 鈥楬ow does a man walk away from that?鈥欌��

When Alexakis was a young boy, his own father left him.

鈥淎 lot of people think I hate my dad. I don鈥檛 hate my dad. My dad was damaged goods, man. He was abandoned by his dad when he was 2 鈥� when my grandmother ran off with a door-to-door salesman,鈥� Alexakis said. 鈥溾�� So, there鈥檚 a long cycle of abandonment in my family, and I鈥檓 the first one who broke that cycle.鈥�

When he performs songs like 鈥淔ather of Mine,鈥� Alexakis said he has to remember the real emotions that inspired it.

鈥淚t鈥檚 difficult sometimes, but I have to get into that mindset of that kid in 鈥楩ather of Mine,鈥� because a lot of these songs are not songs you can just phone in,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not writing songs about partying or (playing) Dungeons and Dragons 鈥� I鈥檓 writing songs about stuff that happens in people鈥檚 lives, or that has happened in my life. 鈥� After all these years, it鈥檚 not so hard to fall into it, but I definitely have to get into that mindset.鈥�
