Furry companions will return to the former Bolton Animal Hospital property, as one of the defunct practice鈥檚 veterinarians prepares to launch a new chapter of care.

Roughly seven weeks after Bolton Animal Hospital closed, Dr. Anna Algermissen 鈥� an Albuquerque native and veterinarian of four years 鈥� said she will open a new practice at the property, situated near the Albuquerque International Sunport at 2005 Yale SE. The practice, Alegre Animal Hospital, is expected to open on July 27.

鈥淚鈥檓 super excited,鈥� Algermissen said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a fresh start.鈥�

Algermissen had been working at Bolton Animal Hospital for two years when the practice closed in late May after 85 years in business. The practice鈥檚 owner, the National Veterinary Association, said financial factors contributed to the closure, which Algermissen said came as a shock to the staff and clients.

鈥淚 feel like all of us were super devastated,鈥� she said.

When Algermissen learned that the property鈥檚 owner 鈥� the Bolton family 鈥� had also listed the property for nearly $1.2 million, she felt compelled to step in. Algermissen is in the process of purchasing the property in a sale expected to close July 22.

鈥淚 love the clients here, and I felt like the community was losing such a huge resource,鈥� Algermissen said. 鈥淚t just seemed like the right thing to do, honestly. I just wanted to continue to be able to serve this area.鈥�

The move was a big step for Algermissen, who has always wanted to open her own practice but never envisioned launching one of this capacity 鈥� a 6,562-square-foot clinic operation with three exam rooms, four offices, a surgical room and a kennel with 38 pet spaces.

But the opportunity came with several full-circle moments. Her mother had previously worked for Bolton Animal Hospital for nearly 20 years; her brother, a commercial broker, was handling the property listing; and the practice regularly served clients from Albuquerque鈥檚 South Valley, where Algermissen grew up.

鈥淚t seemed like it was kind of meant to be,鈥� she said.

Bringing another privately owned option to Albuquerque was a bonus, Algermissen said, adding that many of the city鈥檚 small animal clinics are corporately owned.

Alegre Animal Hospital will offer the same services Bolton Animal Hospital did, including wellness, surgical, dental, diagnostic and hospitality offerings. Algermissen said she plans to continue the high-quality care that Bolton Animal Hospital had, while offering better pricing and a family feel.

Algermissen added she鈥檚 hoping to make the practice an accessible community resource and a place where 鈥渆veryone feels valued and heard.鈥�

Alegre will also have animal chiropractic services, which Bolton did not offer. The property is also starting fresh with new equipment, paint and kennel flooring. With a large portion of the property鈥檚 land unused, Algermissen said she may also explore building more outdoor play space or adding more kennels in the future.

Algermissen was able to retain three of Bolton鈥檚 employees, and she plans to hire two or three more vets and their assistants, as the new practice establishes itself. Given Bolton鈥檚 longtime presence and the community鈥檚 response when it closed, Algermissen is anticipating Alegre will receive a warm welcome.

鈥淚t feels like a community venture, which has been really nice, to feel that support from everybody,鈥� she said.
