Public Service Company of New Mexico launches mobile app
The app, which gives customers insights into energy use, is part of a larger grid modernization plan
Public Service Company of New Mexico, the state’s largest electric utility, launched a mobile app on Tuesday.
The app, which can be used on iPhone and Android, allows customers to make payments, enroll in budget billing, view payment history and get tips on how to save on energy costs. The app is called PNM Mobile.
The app is part of a larger rollout of PNM’s grid modernization plan, under which the utility — a subsidiary of TXNM Energy which serves nearly 550,000 New Mexicans — will install smart meters on homes and businesses across the state to allow customers to get more personal insights on energy consumption.
“The launch of the PNM Mobile app is part of PNM’s broader effort to expand digital self-service options and give customers more flexibility in how they interact with their account,” a news release says. “These tools help customers stay connected, plan ahead, and manage their energy use with confidence.”
The Journal downloaded the app. At the top of the home screen is the amount due for the next bill and the date it is due. Users can toggle to opt into auto pay billing, paperless billing and budget billing. Below the “Make a Payment” button are tips on saving energy.
“Maintaining a full fridge of food actually keeps your refrigerator cooler with less energy usage,” says one tip. Same with dryers: “Drying full loads of clothes will cut back on the energy expenses of doing laundry.”
The app also provides insight into how much households use versus similar homes, down to the appliance.
A stat informed this reporter, who has children, “You used 78% more energy in laundry in the bill period ending Aug. 24 compared to similar homes.”
Eric Chavez, PNM spokesperson, in an email said that data from the app will “not be sold to third parties.”
