Eight years after serving its first customers, a locally owned burrito chain dedicated to supporting veterans has opened its ninth restaurant.

Stripes Burrito Co. has a new location up and running at 260 98th NW. The restaurant opened for business in late April after more than nine months of construction.

In an email to the Journal, Stripes spokesperson AJ Delon said the community has been 鈥渧ery supportive鈥 of the company and its new location.

Stripes was founded in 2018, with a focus on making every burrito a vehicle for giving back to New Mexico鈥檚 veterans. The company does so by donating a portion of every dollar earned to the VA Hospital in Albuquerque.

For the opening of its 98th Street location, the company donated $41,450 to the hospital, adding to the more than $300,000 Stripes has donated since its founding.

Delon said he never envisioned the burrito company growing the way it has over the last several years, adding the company just 鈥渢ook one step at a time and got here鈥 with support from customers.

The company decided to bring its award-winning burritos and chicken sandwiches to 98th Street because of the area鈥檚 heavy traffic, proximity to Amazon鈥檚 Albuquerque distribution center and growth, Delon said.

In recent years, the area has welcomed a new Sonic Drive-In, Dutch Bros, Whataburger, Caliber Collision and Goodwill. Several land parcels are also being marketed as ready for development on the Commercial Association of Realtors New Mexico website.

Stripes brings a 1,700-square-foot restaurant and a drive-thru to the area, also offering an interior that seats up to 35 customers. The location employs roughly 25 people.

There鈥檚 more to come 鈥 the burrito company plans to open its milestone 10th location in Bernalillo next year. It will go behind a recently opened Bob鈥檚 Burgers at 560 N.M. 528.

鈥淲e thank our customers,鈥 Delon said. 鈥淭hey are the reason for expansion. We will keep serving our customers and supporting our veterans.鈥
