What steps do you believe should be taken to improve New Mexico's economic competitiveness?

Improve infrastructure, strengthen workforce development, and align education with industry needs. Streamline regulations while maintaining accountability, and ensure incentives support long-term growth. Invest in border-region assets like Santa Teresa, expand broadband, and support small businesses. Focus on practical, regional strategies that attract good-paying jobs and diversify the economy.

New Mexico is the only state that does not pay its legislators a salary, though lawmakers do receive per diem payments and can qualify for a legislative pension. Do you support or oppose the proposed constitutional amendment calling for a new legislative salary tied to the median family income level?

I support exploring a legislative salary tied to median income, with strong safeguards. Compensation should make public service accessible to working families, not just those who can afford to serve, while remaining transparent, reasonable, and tied to performance and accountability.

With New Mexico now the nation鈥檚 second-highest oil producing state, would you support or oppose changes to the state鈥檚 gross receipts tax and personal income tax structures? Please explain.

I support targeted, responsible tax reform, not sweeping changes. We should use energy revenues to reduce the regressive impact of the gross receipts tax on working families and small businesses, while maintaining stability. Any income tax changes should protect middle-income earners and sustain investments in education, infrastructure, and public safety.

Would you support or oppose imposing water use limits on data centers? In addition, would you generally support or oppose banning data centers in New Mexico?

I would approach water use limits with caution. Targeting one industry could set a precedent that unintentionally impacts others, such as agriculture. If a local region can accommodate the use of resources without negative impacts, it may be feasible, but if water isn鈥檛 available, it shouldn鈥檛 be an option.

Amid a recent string of high-profile criminal cases involving juvenile defendants, do you support or oppose imposing stricter sentences for adolescents convicted of certain violent crimes?

I support accountability for serious violent crimes, but I鈥檓 cautious about broad changes to juvenile sentencing. Any approach should balance public safety with rehabilitation and due process. We should focus on targeted, evidence-based policies that address serious offenses while preserving pathways for rehabilitation and reducing repeat offenses.

Would you support or oppose a ban on selling certain types of firearms, including semiautomatic firearms and machine guns?

I support responsible gun ownership. I would not support broad bans on commonly owned firearms. Instead, I favor enforcing existing laws, addressing illegal trafficking, and investing in mental health resources, while focusing on measures that target criminal misuse and protect the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.

Do you support or oppose using New Mexico鈥檚 National Guard to assist local law enforcement with issues related to public safety?

I support using the National Guard in a limited, clearly defined role to assist with public safety when local resources are overwhelmed. Any deployment should be temporary, coordinated with local authorities, and focused on support functions, not replacing civilian law enforcement.

What changes would you propose to improve New Mexico鈥檚 Children, Youth and Families Department?

Strengthen oversight and accountability, reduce caseloads, and improve worker recruitment and retention. Invest in training and front-line support, expand preventive and family-based services, and improve coordination with schools, courts, and providers. The goal is a system that prioritizes child safety while stabilizing families and improving long-term outcomes.

What steps should be taken to bring New Mexico into compliance with the 2018 court ruling that found New Mexico is failing to provide a sufficient education to all students?

We must continue investing in teachers and school staff, high-quality instructional materials, and evidence-based programs that support all students. Targeted support for at-risk students remains critical. Local communities know their students best, there is no one-size-fits-all approach, so funding must reach classrooms and deliver measurable results.

New Mexico has seen a string of devastating wildfires and floods in recent years. What policy steps, if any, should the state take to address these natural disasters?

The state should invest in prevention, resilience, and recovery. That includes forest and watershed management, flood control infrastructure, and stronger emergency response coordination. We must also support communities rebuilding after disasters and plan long-term, recognizing that drought, wildfire, and flooding are interconnected challenges requiring proactive, not reactive, solutions.

Would you support or oppose a paid family and medical leave program that would require most employees and employers to pay into a state-run fund?

I support helping families access paid leave but remain cautious about a one-size-fits-all state mandate. Any program must balance support for workers with impacts on small businesses and remain sustainable, ensuring families can take needed time without
