George Gershwin鈥檚 鈥淩hapsody in Blue鈥 is turning 100 this year, and orchestras across the globe are joining the celebration.

The New Mexico Philharmonic will perform Gershwin鈥檚 masterwork on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Gershwin penned his masterpiece at the age of 25.

The composer鈥檚 fusion of classical and jazz music was born in controversy.

鈥淭he New York Times critic called it the worst masterpiece ever written when it first came out,鈥 said guest conductor Na鈥橺ir McFadden.

鈥淓very major work is heavily criticized,鈥 he continued. 鈥淪travinsky鈥檚 鈥楾he Rite of Spring鈥 actually caused riots. Even Mozart was considered too much for his time.鈥

McFadden is the assistant conductor for the Detroit Symphony.

Kate Shao, first-place winner in the piano division of the Jackie McGehee Young Artists鈥 Competition, will helm the keyboards.

Opening with that signature clarinet glissando, the composition is a challenge for all members of the orchestra.

鈥淭here are four cadenzas that Gershwin wrote, and each one is more and more challenging, but the music is so gorgeous,鈥 McFadden said. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l see me dancing at the podium.鈥

The composer鈥檚 fusion of jazz and classical traditions captured the kaleidoscopic melting pot of Jazz Age New York.

Woody Allen used it in his valentine to the city he loved: 鈥淢anhattan鈥 (1979), and Leonardo DiCaprio in 鈥淭he Great Gatsby鈥 (2013), raised a glass to it, while fireworks blossomed in the background. 近距离内射合集 Airlines used it as their theme music for years.

The program also includes Camille Saint-Sa毛ns鈥 Cello Concerto No. 1, with Jackie McGehee first-place string division winner Sydney Tasker on cello.

鈥淚t鈥檚 one of the masterworks for the cello,鈥 McFadden said. 鈥淓very cellist at some point in their career has performed this piece.鈥

Saint-Sa毛ns wrote it when he was 37.

鈥淭his piece kind of marked his acceptance in the French school,鈥 McFadden added. 鈥淓ven Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich called it one of the greatest cello concertos ever written.鈥

The concert will open with 鈥淏allade in a minor鈥 by the composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

鈥淚鈥檓 very excited to bring this piece to New Mexico,鈥 McFadden said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 one of my favorite composers in the classical repertoire.

鈥淗e鈥檚 an African English composer born in London,鈥 McFadden continued. 鈥淚 would consider him similar to Dvorak or Tchaikovsky. In New York, they called him the 鈥楢frican Mahler.鈥欌

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky鈥檚 dramatic symphonic poem 鈥淩omeo and Juliet鈥 closes the show.

鈥淭his is a fan favorite,鈥 McFadden said. 鈥淚t is such a masterwork. It鈥檚 based on Shakespeare鈥檚 play. The action is told from the point of view of Friar Laurence, who tells the story. The battle scene is epic; it鈥檚 loud, it鈥檚 exciting.鈥

The overture鈥檚 love theme has appeared in many television series and movies such as 鈥淐olumbo,鈥 鈥淲ayne鈥檚 World,鈥 鈥淪crubs,鈥 鈥淪outh Park,鈥 鈥淭he Simpsons,鈥 鈥淐lueless,鈥 鈥淎 Christmas Story,鈥 鈥淭he Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,鈥 鈥淪pongeBob SquarePants鈥 and 鈥淭he Ren & Stimpy Show,鈥 among others.
