The Tour of the Gila has a reputation that reaches well beyond state lines.

Cynthia Taylor was living and racing professionally in Australia a few years back, but when a friend heard mention of her New Mexican roots, there was only one obvious recommendation to make to a like-minded cycling aficionado.

鈥淚 was talking about how my family is from New Mexico and I have a friend there 鈥 he鈥檚 now a retired professional racer. He was like, 鈥極h man, I remember that race. It was so beautiful. The mountains kicked my butt, but it was the best thing I ever did ... if you are visiting your family when the Gila happens, you have to do it,鈥 鈥 Taylor recalls. 鈥淚鈥檓 here, and the stars aligned.鈥

Cyclists from around the world have traveled to Silver City to complete in the Tour of the Gila. Fans routinely crowd streets to get a close look.

Taylor, who is in Albuquerque to get her master鈥檚 degree in biomedical engineering at the University of New Mexico, no longer races at the professional level. However, with the Gila, even the amateur version is notoriously challenging.

鈥淭he Gila is interesting because it鈥檚 a stage race, which means it鈥檚 over multiple days 鈥 even for amateurs,鈥 Taylor said. 鈥淲hich is really cool because a lot of amateur races are one-day events, maybe two days, and this is a three-day event.

鈥溾 What鈥檚 also interesting is there鈥檚 climbing at elevation 鈥 that鈥檚 hard. For the elite athlete, for the amateur, for the person who鈥檚 been training for three years or three months, that鈥檚 gonna be hard for everybody.鈥

It鈥檚 an addicting sort of pain. Take J.P. Schreiner, for example. A native New Mexican who is a father of two and owns a plumbing and heating company in Albuquerque, Schreiner will be racing the Gila for the fifth time in the 2,3 category 鈥 the highest level for amateurs. There鈥檚 a reason why, even as life鈥檚 obligations become more demanding, that he keeps coming back.

鈥淭he riding down in Silver City and the Tour of the Gila is incredible,鈥 Schreiner said. 鈥淭he promotion, the quality of the field. It鈥檚 really one of the only stage races left in the country that鈥檚 available to amateur racers. And being in our backyard, it鈥檚 just phenomenal.鈥

While the amateur race offers plenty of appeal, the professional category 鈥 typically referred to as UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale), the world governing body for cycling 鈥 attracts teams from all over the world. Case in point: The 2024 Tour of the Gila will host a women鈥檚 team from Uzbekistan, among others. According to race co-director Michael Engleman, the international presence will be slightly diminished this year due to a combination of scheduling conflicts and the upcoming Summer Olympics. Still, this is a race that has drawn top riders 鈥 think Lance Armstrong, Mara Abbott and Kristin Armstrong, to name a few 鈥 on a consistent basis.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just unique. It鈥檚 got a couple mountaintop finishes. You鈥檙e out in the wilderness. There鈥檚 definitely a lot of teams that want to come,鈥 said Engleman. 鈥淭he race is known globally. It鈥檚 a little bit of a legendary race because people have either heard about it or raced it.鈥

The event is a point of pride for Silver City, as well. Residents open their homes to riders, and for a few days, the southwestern New Mexican town gets to expose the world to its charms.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always a big deal. It鈥檚 a cycling community. It鈥檚 an outdoor community. There鈥檚 three bike shops in that little town,鈥 Engleman said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just something that everybody expects every year. The restaurants are full. The grocery stores are full 鈥 There鈥檚 so many events that go on down there. It just kind of fits in among everything else.鈥

The amateur race has undergone one noteworthy change for the upcoming event. In past years, it had the same number of stages (five) as the UCI race. Now, it will be four stages for the highest-level amateurs and three for all others.

鈥淭he fields were getting so small that we had to make some changes,鈥 Engleman said. 鈥淚鈥檓 hoping that maybe that would draw some people in if it鈥檚 a long weekend versus taking a whole week off. We just had to try it.鈥

Even with that adjustment, the course will be plenty challenging. It鈥檚 why people keep coming back.

鈥淎s long as I can train and race and afford to, it鈥檚 something I would return to every year,鈥 Schreiner said. 鈥淚f there鈥檚 any amateur racers who are looking to have experiences close to what a professional would, it鈥檚 got to be up there with the best.鈥

Taylor, meanwhile, expects to reconnect with old cycling friends and most likely, make new ones.

鈥淭here鈥檚 no bonding quite like suffering up a mountain,鈥 she said.
