After a six-year hiatus, the Santa Fe Women鈥檚 Ensemble and the Durango Women鈥檚 Choir will join forces in a concert in Santa Fe on Sunday, June 9.

Slated for Santa Fe鈥檚 First Presbyterian Church, the two groups will join together with 27 voices performing three pieces celebrating women singing together.

The concert will open with Norwegian American composer Ola Gjeilo鈥檚 dramatic 鈥淕loria.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 an experience,鈥 said music director Linda Raney. 鈥淚t uses both our accompanists on four-handed piano.鈥

鈥淐hoose Something Like a Star鈥 features poetry by Robert Frost and music by Randall Thompson.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a beautiful text and very inspiring,鈥 Raney said. 鈥淎 lot of people may remember it from their high school graduation.鈥

Frost penned the text as a conversation between humanity and a bright star to shed light on remaining steadfast in our purpose despite outer circumstances.

The concert will end with 鈥淪he Rises,鈥 with music and text by Catherine Dalton.

鈥淪he鈥檚 exploring the physics of light and the history of illumination through the human voice,鈥 Raney said. 鈥淚t has a very Celtic feel.鈥

Dalton wrote: 鈥淏ecause I was working with light and the sun, I did a search for 鈥楥eltic sun goddess鈥 and discovered the Celtic sun goddess, Brigid. I did more research into Brigid, and found St. Brigid of Kildare, the Irish saint of, among other things, poetry, the hearth fire, the forge and illumination. I wrote the lyrics based on my research and changed the name of the song.鈥

Each group will also perform a separate series of four songs. The Women鈥檚 Ensemble will sing 鈥淐olorful鈥 by Philip E. Silvey; 鈥淭he Voyage鈥 by Marie-Claire Saindon, 鈥淎 Red Robin鈥 by Daniel Brinsmead; and 鈥淏y Night鈥 by Elaine Hagenberg.

The Durango Choir will sing 鈥淎d Astra鈥 by Jacob Narverud; 鈥淚 Am the Wind鈥 by Hagenberg, 鈥淏right Morning Stars,鈥 arranged by Shawn Kirchner; and 鈥淟et Me Fly,鈥 arranged by Robert De Cormier.
