Worms, skating and outdoor adventures: 7 events this week

Gardening in New Mexico is hard. But this weekend, you can learn how to get a 鈥渉and鈥 from worms at the Open Space Visitor Center. Or inch over to one of these other events.

Remembering the history

The Corrales Historical Society is hosting Jon Ghahate as he speaks on 鈥淭he Pueblo Revolt of 1690鈥 at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16. Ghahate, a member of Laguna and Zuni pueblos, is a staff educator at the Crow Canyon Archeological Center in Colorado and a public speaker on Southwest ancestral civilization. The event is free but seating is limited. The Historic Old San Ysidro Church is located at 966 Old Church Road in Corrales.

Getting the worm

Spring is just around the corner and it鈥檚 never too early to start thinking about gardening. The Open Space Visitor Center is hosting a 鈥淐omposting with Worms鈥 class at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. The event will cover the basics of vermicomposting and how to set up and manage a worm composting operation at home. To register for the free event visit . Los Altos Skate Park is hosting an Anti-Valentine鈥檚 Skate Jam from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. The event is free. Los Altos Skate Park is located at 9930 Lomas Blvd. NE.

A special event

The Albuquerque Museum is hosting a special performance of 鈥淏roken Boxes: A Decade of Art, Action, and Dialogue鈥 featuring Elisa Harkins, at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20. Inspired by music by Daniel Chazanoff, Harkins will sing in a combination of Cherokee, English and Muscogee (Creek) to electronic dance music. The event is free. The Albuquerque Museum is located at

Explora鈥檚 X Teen Studio is hosting X Studio Star League from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16. The event is a free video game tournament for youth ages 13 to 19. X Teen Studio is located at 1701 Mountain Road NW.

Be eagle-eyed

Help document species at the Petroglyph National Monument鈥檚 South Point Day Use Area during the Great Backyard Bird Count at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. The annual event is aimed at helping scientists better understand global bird populations. The entrance to the day use area is located off Mirehaven Parkway NW.

The great outdoors

The 2025 New Mexico Outdoor Adventures Show comes to the Manuel Lujan Building at Expo New Mexico from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16. The event will feature calling contests, wildlife demonstrations, kids activities and more. Admission is $5 for adults, and free for youth age 17 and younger or those with a valid New Mexico hunting and fishing license. Expo New Mexico is located at 300 San Pedro Drive NE.
