Bubonicon 57 brings top sci-fi and fantasy authors to Albuquerque
IN ALBUQUERQUE AND IN SANTA FE
Albuquerque author Jennifer Givhan will talk about her new novel 鈥淭he Sleeping Sisters鈥� at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Books on the Bosque, and at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Collected Works.
In the story, Fortuna Mi茅rcoles has finally moved her family to a better neighborhood across the Rio Grande. Fortuna is desperate to outrun the curse that has stalked her bloodlines, but burying the family鈥檚 violent legacy 鈥� and her own haunting secret 鈥� aren鈥檛 that easy.
Twenty years ago, girls and women vanished in the Albuquerque night, their bodies unearthed on the West Mesa. The killer was never caught. Now the killings have restarted beneath the dormant twin volcanoes called The Sleeping Sisters.
Givhan鈥檚 novel is inspired by true events.
At Books on the Bosque, she will be in conversation with author T. Kingfisher.

IN ALBUQUERQUE
Bubonicon 57, billed as New Mexico鈥檚 best and longest-running sci-fi and fantasy literary and arts convention, will be held Friday, Aug. 21, through Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Albuquerque Marriott Uptown.
The co-guests of honor are fantasy author Patricia Briggs and sci-fi/fantasy author Martha Wells. Toastmaster is fantasy author Travis Baldree.

AT BOOKS ON THE BOSQUE
Samantha Rae Ortiz of Albuquerque will discuss 鈥淯ncovered Earth: Book 2鈥� in her 鈥淲hispers of Eden鈥� series at the bookstore at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16.
Desperate to return to Nyine City and right her terrible wrongs, Layden Prier finds herself in the middle of a conflict she knows nothing about, pursued by a god she doesn鈥檛 understand and with a calling she doesn鈥檛 want.
The new installment of this adult dystopian fantasy follows Layden as she blossoms into womanhood and into her role as a prophetess.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, Travis Baldree will chat about his work as an author, a video game designer and an audiobook narrator.
He is widely known for his narration of the audiobooks of the 鈥淐radle鈥� series by Will Wight and for his novel 鈥淟egends & Lattes.鈥� The novel was a finalist for the 2023 Hugo Award for Best Novel. Baldree released a prequel, 鈥淏ookshops & Bonedust.鈥�
He describes the series as 鈥渃ozy fantasy,鈥� which focuses on everyday moments in the style of speculative fiction and fantasy.

IN SANTA FE
Carla Chung Mattix will discuss her new book 鈥淣ational Parks and the Supreme Court: Groundbreaking Legal Battles鈥� at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Collected Works in Santa Fe.
The book addresses five landmark Supreme Court cases that relate to Gettysburg, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and the National Mall.
Mattix, a Santa Fe resident, served for more than 25 years as an attorney for the National Park Service.
Collected Works is located at 202 Galisteo St. in Santa Fe.
AT THE MENAUL SCHOOL
Richard Chavez will sign copies of his novel 鈥淗ijo del Barrio鈥� from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, in the Historical Library of Menaul High School, 301 Menaul Blvd. NE.
Told through flashbacks, it鈥檚 the story of a young Hispanic Marine from a poor barrio in New Mexico.
Chavez lives in Corrales.
