Cowgirls, quilts and Route 66: 7 events this week

The New Mexico State Fair will be upon us before you know it, but this weekend the fair comes to the Albuquerque Museum. Along with the opening of a new exhibit, the museum is hosting a one-day show featuring a bevy of award-winning quilts.

New Mexico Day of the Cowgirl is coming to the Rio Grande Best Western Wild Avocado from 3-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1. The event will be an evening of music and poetry. The performance schedule includes Jenna Thunborg and Friends, Miska Paget, Debbie Minarik and Dancing to Dawn Tarpley & the Westernhers. The event is free. A stitch in time
The New Mexico Quilters Association is sponsoring a one-day show, 鈥淣ew Mexico State Fair Quilts,鈥� from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. The show is in conjuction with the Albuquerque Museum鈥檚 鈥淔un at the State Fair!鈥� exhibit that opens Aug. 1 and runs through Feb. 14, 2027. The Albuquerque Museum is located at 2000 Mountain Road NW.
Ready to rock

鈥榊ou鈥檙e killin鈥� me, Smalls!鈥�
The classic film of baseball and The Beast 鈥淭he Sandlot鈥� comes to Balloon Fiesta Park at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5. The drive-in movie event is free. Balloon Fiesta Park is located at 4401 Alameda Blvd. NE.
Sharing his art
Hopi woodcarver Randy Brokeshoulder will be at the Coronado Historic Site from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. Brokeshoulder will be giving a demonstration on how he creates wood figurines from cottonwood rot, using natural pigments, yarn, feathers and horsehair to bring them to life. Admission is free to New Mexico residents on first Sundays and for qualifying individuals and $7 for nonresidents. The Coronado Historic Site is located at 485 Kuaua Road in Bernalillo.
Night at the museum
Chatter will be performing free concerts Thursday nights in August at the Albuquerque Museum. The program is inspired by the museum鈥檚 summer exhibits 鈥淭he Other Route 66鈥� and 鈥淭he Woods Before Sunrise,鈥� and explores the themes of 鈥渏ourneying, memory and landscape.鈥� The concerts will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, Aug. 13, Aug. 20 and Aug. 27. The Albuquerque Museum is located at 2000 Mountain Road NW.
鈥楾he Old Road鈥�
As part of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center鈥檚 50th anniversary celebration this August, the center is holding a reception and opening for the mural 鈥淭he Old Road,鈥� a multidimensional installation that shows Pueblo people and places along Route 66. The event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1. Eventgoers can meet the artists 鈥� Warren Montoya (Pueblos of Santa Ana/Santa Clara), Margarita Paz Pedro (Pueblo of Laguna/Mexican American), Keith Scott (Pueblo of Laguna) and Akilah Martinez (Din茅) 鈥� and learn how the mural travels through time. Visit the IPCC East or South check-in desks and mention 鈥淭he Old Road Reception鈥� to get free admission. The IPCC is located at 2401 12th St. NW.
