You can get a taste of the old West this weekend in Magdalena during the Frontier Festival. My colleagues at El Defensor Chieftain have reported that the grand marshal for this year鈥檚 event will be the one and only Smokey Bear. Or you can mosey over to one of these other events.

Flowers for days
The Albuquerque Daylily Society is hosting a show and plant sale from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at the Albuquerque Garden Center. Eventgoers can learn about the best way to care for daylilies, purchase plants and take in the colorful blooms of the show, which has a design theme of 鈥淭he Nostalgia of New Mexico鈥檚 Route 66.鈥 The event is free. The garden center is located at 10120 Lomas Blvd. NE.
Honoring an icon
The second annual Frida Fest is coming to Santa Fe from Friday, June 26, through Sunday, June 28. The event will feature music, a replica of Kahlo鈥檚 bed, a talk from photographer Christina Kahlo, great-niece of Frida, a Frida drag show and more. The event benefits the Nacha Mendez Music Scholarships for New Mexican Girls of Color. Admission to events starts at $25 at nachamendezscholarship.org, but some events are free.
Turn, turn, turn
鈥淒avid Croxton: The Art of Turning鈥 opens at the Wild Hearts Gallery on Tuesday, June 30. It will run through Aug. 2. The show features the work of Croxton, an internationally recognized woodworker. A highlight of the show will be the 鈥淏asket Illusion鈥 pieces, where a solid piece of wood is carved to look like a woven basket. There will be an artist reception from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 11. Wild Hearts Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and is located at 221-5 N.M. 165 Highway in Placitas. A place in the sun
Santa Fe-based quartet Love Unfold The Sun will be performing at the Outpost Performance Space at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 2. Love Unfold The Sun combines jazz and rock with Middle Eastern/Turkish elements. Tickets are $17.13-$33.10 at holdmyticket.com. The Outpost Performance Space is located at 210 Yale Blvd. SE.
How the West was fun
The Magdalena Frontier Festival is bringing a day of history and fun to the village on Saturday, June 27. The festival will feature a parade at 10 a.m., along with mutton busting, chuckwagon food, gunfight shows and more. For more information visit villageofmagdalena.com.
Community sounds
The Red Light Cameras and NEH will perform at Winrock Park at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 26. The free event is part of the summer concert series at the park. Eventgoers are invited to bring chairs and food trucks will be on hand. Visit ampconcerts.org for more information.

鈥淏oth Sides Now: The Music and Lives of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen鈥 is coming to the KiMo Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 28.
