A devoted father, Daniel Hillard, loses custody of his children following a divorce and will go to any length to see them again, even if that means posing as an elderly Scottish housekeeper named Mrs. Doubtfire. Originally a novel 鈥 then a 1993 hit film starring Robin Williams 鈥 Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick turned 鈥淢rs. Doubtfire鈥 into a musical comedy in 2019, and the touring production is opening at Popejoy Hall on Thursday, April 23.

鈥淓xpect a lot of fun musical dance numbers,鈥 Craig Allen Smith, who plays the title role, said. 鈥淥ur ensemble is amazing. They鈥檙e doing a whole dance showcase throughout the show. So, you鈥檝e got fun songs and a lot of great music.鈥

Besides incorporating music and dance, the stage version of 鈥淢rs. Doubtfire鈥 transfers the three-decade-old film to a present-day setting.

鈥淚t still touches on the nostalgia of the film, but it is a little updated ... Like, we have iPhones and iPads,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淭here are also some pop cultural references that people will get. I mention Harry Styles at one point.鈥

The musical retains many of the film鈥檚 memorable slapstick elements and visual gags, including the 鈥渞un-by fruiting鈥 scene, the pie in the face and the blouse on fire.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 have a real fire in theaters,鈥 Smith said, 鈥渁nd I don鈥檛 want to give away the technical details, but it鈥檚 fun to watch.鈥

One challenging aspect of the role is Smith鈥檚 many costume changes 鈥 30 per show.

鈥淭he fastest one, I think they timed it at 28 seconds,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚 have a team of three people who help me out. At every location, we get a local dresser who will help zip up dresses and put shoes on. ... I also have a wig and mask 鈥 a silicone mask 鈥 that wraps over, and I snap it on. Then we put the wig on, and off we go.鈥

Smith, like Robin Williams, has a talent for impressions, which he showcases throughout the musical.

鈥淚 do Elmo in the show. I do Mickey Mouse. I do Kermit the Frog ... I do a whole bunch,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚 do Dobby the Elf.鈥

Although primarily a comedy, 鈥淢rs. Doubtfire鈥 also has moments of family drama and bittersweet emotions. At its heart, it is about a father鈥檚 love for his children, and Smith, who is a divorced dad himself, could relate.

鈥淎t the end ... there鈥檚 a courtroom scene, and it鈥檚 very dramatic,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚 thought of what I went through as a dad, and it鈥檚 the same thing Daniel is going through.鈥

Smith said he was able to draw on his personal experiences to bring emotional truth to the Daniel Hillard/Mrs. Doubtfire role. But more than that, he said performing the role also helped him heal.

鈥淚t鈥檚 actually been therapeutic for me to deal with that guilt of not always being there for your kids and stuff, but knowing that you would do anything for them,鈥 Smith said.
