Lavender in the Village Festival celebrates the scent-sational flower
The event features 150+ vendors, kids鈥� activities and more

Stop and smell the lavender 颅鈥� or eat it or slather it on you. The Lavender in the Village Festival brings all this and more to Balloon Fiesta Park on Saturday, July 25.
Rio Grande Community Farm took the festival over from the Lavender in the Village Foundation a few years ago, Jamie Welles, executive director of the farm, said. The event started as a way to raise money for the community farm, she said, and continues to support it today.
The Rio Grande Community Farm has made a few changes to the festival since taking the reins.
鈥淚n order for everyone to enjoy their experience at the festival, we moved it to Balloon Fiesta Park,鈥� Welles said.
Traffic and space issues prompted a move to Balloon Fiesta Park where the festival now brings in almost 10,000 eventgoers, Welles said, and features over 150 vendors.
The focus of the festival is lavender products, food and art, and the event coincides with lavender harvest season. The plant is easy to grow in the area, Welles said.
Expect kids activities and a spot where people can build their own lavender sachets.
The festival also focuses on education.
鈥淚 think one of the main things that we have started doing when we took it over is we have educational presentations on regenerative farming,鈥� Welles said. The practice benefits the soil by avoiding tilling and chemicals, she said.
Eventgoers can learn techniques for small space gardening, along with permaculture.
Many places that grow their own lavender, like Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm, Jo鈥檚 Farms and Los Ranchos de Albuquerque鈥檚 Larry P. Abraham Agri-Nature Center, will be participating as vendors.
Welles said she just wants everyone to enjoy the lavender-filled atmosphere.
鈥淚 just want to see everybody out there having a good time,鈥� Welles said.
