BOOK NOTES

New Mexico author Elizabeth Rose Quinn will discuss ‘Payback’ at two events

Published

AUTHOR HAS TWO EVENTS IN ALBUQUERQUE

New Mexico author Elizabeth Rose Quinn will discuss “Payback,” her second thriller, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW.

Then at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, Quinn will be in conversation with Jeff C. Carter about her book at Books on the Bosque, 6261 Riverside Plaza Lane NW.

Quinn earned praise for “Follow Me,” her debut novel about mommy influencers.

She returns now with “Payback.” In it, seven inmates reside in Los Angeles’ premier minimum-security jail where the privileged serve time Friday to Monday. But New Year’s weekend arrives and the inmates — among them a driven campaign manager, a disgraced nurse and a party girl — discover their abusive guard is dead.

The inmates have to solve the murder before their cushy arrangement turns into a permanent stay in maximum security.

The thriller is filled with Quinn’s humor layered onto a twisty plot and characters.

AT GARCIA STREET BOOKS

Taylor Brown will be in conversation with Elizabeth Hightower Allen about Brown’s latest novel “Wolvers” at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Santa Fe bookstore.

The New York Times says “Wolvers” is “violent, tender and thrilling” as it explores the battle between man, wolf and nature through the perspective of three characters — Murdoch, an assassin; Trace Temple, a member of a local ranching family with a new-found respect for wolves; and the she-wolf herself, number One-Eleven.

The novel is set in southwestern New Mexico.

Garcia Street Books is located at 376 Garcia St. in Santa Fe.

AT COLLECTED WORKS

Fiddler-vocalist Jordan Wax will lead a singalong Yiddish concert at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Santa Fe bookstore. He will use the music to talk about the Yiddish Book Center’s current theme “Between Two Worlds: Exploring Jewish Culture and Religion Through Yiddish Literature.”

The Santa Fe Public Library is co-sponsoring the event. The concert is free; seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Collected Works is located at 202 Galisteo St. in Santa Fe.

IN TAOS

SOMOS Salon will host three literary events this week.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, May 7, Taos author Christine Reed discusses her new memoir “Alone in Wonderland: Longing for Connection and Adventure in the Shadow of Mount Rainier.”

When Reed stumbled across a long-distance hiking blog, she never imagined it would change her life. With little trail experience and no plan, she decided to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail.

Years later and newly single, Reed sets out to hike the 93-mile Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier — alone.

“Alone in Wonderland” explores themes of grief, relational trauma, personal renewal and healing.

At 6 p.m. Friday, May 8, poets Veronica Golos, Margaret Lee and Jack Jacober will read from their work.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, May 9, Kay Matthews will talk about her book “Antonio ‘Ike’ DeVargas: Norteño Warrior: The Politics of Land, Water and Justice in Northern New Mexico.”

SOMOS Salon is located at 108 Civic Plaza Drive in Taos.
