Music was Joseph Williams鈥� first language.

As the son of composer John Williams and actress-singer Barbara Ruick, he said music has affected him down to his bones, leading him down a path to becoming the lead singer of Toto.

鈥淚 hear it in everything, in wind and people鈥檚 speaking voices,鈥� Williams said. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 help it.鈥�

He said it鈥檚 a tremendous thing to have music as a gift and to make an over 50-year career out of it.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 take it for granted,鈥� Williams said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a very, very precious thing that we鈥檙e able to do.鈥�

Williams fronted the rock band Toto from 1986-1988 and again from 2010 to now.

He has worked in the film industry as a composer and voice actor. He was the singing voice for adult Simba in 鈥淭he Lion King鈥� and sang 鈥淗akuna Matata鈥� and 鈥淐an You Feel The Love Tonight.鈥�

When a band has lasted as long as Toto, which formed in 1977, Williams said, it is going to go through changes. While the band has had various members come and go, including Williams himself, he said all that matters is the music.

鈥淭he best we can do is keep the music alive, which is what pretty much the mission is, and provide people with a live setting to be able to hear these songs that they love,鈥� Williams said.

Toto will perform at the First Financial Credit Union Amphitheater on Monday, Aug. 10, with Christopher Cross and The Romantics.

When building the setlist, he said the band starts with the songs they know they have to play, like 鈥淎frica鈥� and 鈥淩osanna.鈥�

鈥淎frica鈥� recently reached 2 billion streams on Spotify. Williams said the song has had many lives over the years, appearing in films, television and in other artists鈥� work.

鈥淚t was on 鈥楽tranger Things,鈥� which all of a sudden brought a younger crowd out to see the band and figure out who this band was that did this tune,鈥� Williams said. 鈥淭hen Weezer had a cover with it in the middle of the 2010s, and that sort of started the ball rolling again. It just seems to keep having life after life after life.鈥�

鈥淎frica鈥� is one of his favorites to perform because of its popularity.

鈥淪ometimes the crowd singing the chorus with you is deafening,鈥� he said.

He said after the well-loved hits, the band jumps to secondary hits like 鈥淕eorgy Porgy.鈥�

Secondary hits, he said, are the ones that the younger crowd might not remember, but those who have done deep dives on albums will. He said there鈥檚 a lot to choose from.

鈥淲e like to try and put something in that鈥檚 never been either done live or not in a long, long time,鈥� Williams said. 鈥淧eople who have gone back and looked into the catalog of Toto stuff will be happy with some of the choices that we have.鈥�

To him, the audience is the greatest part of the gig.

鈥淭he show is the best part of the day,鈥� Williams said. 鈥淭he other 22 hours is what they pay us for.鈥�

Standing on stage and playing for an audience, it is just fun, Williams said. 

鈥淭here鈥檚 just nothing like it.鈥�
