鈥淐ool Machine鈥� by Colson Whitehead is the final book in Whitehead鈥檚 trilogy of Harlem crime novels.

The first book in the Harlem crime trilogy is 鈥淗arlem Shuffle鈥� (2021). It鈥檚 set in the late 1950s. In this novel, Ray, who is a Harlem furniture salesman, is offered admission into the Harlem social club but then ends up getting rejected. His crew decides to rob The Hotel Teresa, which is considered the Waldorf of Harlem. This book tells the story of the aftermath of the 1964 Harlem riots.

The second of the series is 鈥淐rook Manifesto鈥� (2023), which is set in Harlem in the 1970s. In this story, Ray is trying to squire tickets for the Jackson 5 to see with his daughter, but he ends up getting pulled back into the life of crime as counterculture warfare surrounds the city.

The third and final book in the series is 鈥淐ool Machine,鈥� which is set in Harlem in the early 1980s. 鈥淐ool Machine鈥� refers to Ray鈥檚 crime nickname. They call him that because no matter what is happening around him, he keeps a cool head. In this story, Ray devises plans to reclaim the gold medal that Jesse Owens won in the 1936 Olympics. Owens had to sell it later that year for $1.5 million since he had no other economic security. Owens famously said that 鈥測ou can鈥檛 eat four gold medals.鈥� The crime crew devises a plan to break into the real Waldorf Astoria Hotel. This novel tells the story of stolen art and its effect on the communities to which the art belongs.

Each of these stories can be read as stand-alone novels. Whitehead is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of two books: 鈥淭he Underground Railroad鈥� (2016) and 鈥淭he Nickel Boys鈥� (2019). I鈥檇 recommend any of these books to readers. Whitehead is an artist who is good at composing novels that humanize the Black American experience.
