Police arrested a 49-year-old woman accused of killing a friend outside an apartment in Southeast Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Geraldine Begay is charged with an open count of murder, tampering with evidence and robbery.

She is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

It is unclear if Begay has an attorney.

Officers were dispatched around noon to a fight at the Lanai Apartments in the 1000 block of Madeira SE, near Zuni. Police found the apartment in 鈥渄isarray鈥 with broken glass around the unidentified man鈥檚 body.

Officers and rescue personnel attempted life-saving measures on the man, who had a bump on the back of his head and a laceration behind his ear, but he died at the scene.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, a neighbor told police she heard the man say, 鈥淪top, don鈥檛 do that,鈥 and saw him throw Begay out of the apartment.

Police said the neighbor told them she heard glass break and then Begay said, 鈥淚鈥檒l make you die. You鈥檙e not going to touch me like that.鈥 Other neighbors told police the man said he 鈥渢hought he was having a heart attack鈥 and collapsed.

The neighbors told police that, after the man collapsed, Begay threw a 鈥渂lunt object鈥 at the man multiple times and kicked him, according to the complaint. Officers found Begay nearby and detained her.

Begay told police she spent the night at the man鈥檚 apartment and viewed him as a 鈥済odfather.鈥 She said she had left the apartment in the morning but forgot something and when she went back, she found the man dead in the doorway.

Begay denied getting into a physical altercation with the man, but neighbors identified her as the suspect to officers, police said.
