A man is accused of fatally shooting his longtime friend in front of their respective children Friday night in Northeast Albuquerque.

Marcos Rodriguez, 24, is charged with an open count of murder and tampering with evidence in the death of Vicente Arviso, also 24.

Rodriguez was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on Saturday. It is unclear if he has an attorney.

Officers responded to the shooting around 10 p.m. in the 12800 block of Copper NE, just west of Tramway, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. Police found Arviso shot to death inside Rodriguez鈥檚 apartment, and Rodriguez allegedly told them, 鈥渉e made me do it鈥� and 鈥淚 did not have a choice.鈥�

Police said officers did not find a gun inside the apartment but there were three 9mm bullet casings on the floor.

Arviso鈥檚 girlfriend told police they were drinking when Arviso and Rodriguez, who had been friends since childhood, started to argue, according to the complaint. She said Rodriguez was being aggressive and pulled out a gun, telling Arviso he would shoot him and 鈥済et away with it鈥� by claiming self-defense.

Police said Arviso鈥檚 girlfriend told them Rodriguez then fired at Arviso several times and she ran outside with her children, who witnessed the shooting.

Rodriguez鈥檚 girlfriend told a different story, according to the complaint, and said that Arviso was being aggressive toward her. Police said she told them she tried to intervene and Arviso became aggressive with her, angering Rodriguez. Rodriguez鈥檚 girlfriend said Rodriguez told Arviso to leave and Arviso walked toward him with clenched fists.

Rodriguez鈥檚 girlfriend told police he fired at Arviso from across the dining room, but he shot in self-defense, according to the complaint. Rodriguez told police he 鈥渇eared for his and his kids鈥� lives鈥� but stopped speaking with detectives before disclosing how the shooting happened.
