Alisson Bonilla Flores is among 6,610 students at Albuquerque Public Schools who will begin a new chapter Friday 鈥� the start of freshman year.

Bonilla Flores said Thursday she was keen to start classes at Albuquerque High School.

鈥淎ll these upcoming events, the dances, the games, are really exciting,鈥� she said.

For the first time, rising ninth graders across APS are back from summer vacation a day early to get acquainted with their new schools and 鈥� hopefully 鈥� make some new friends as part of the district鈥檚 鈥渏ump start鈥� freshman orientation day.

鈥淲e really want to make sure kids feel like they belong and are ready and know what鈥檚 available at their high school,鈥� Associate Superintendent Kenneth Salazar said.

After a successful sixth grade orientation for students entering middle school last year, APS extended the program to freshmen, aiming to launch their high school experience on a positive note.

On jump start day, ninth graders are placed in groups and paired with an upperclassman mentor, who will guide them through the rest of the school year, Salazar said.

Albuquerque High hosted nearly 325 rising ninth graders at its orientation Thursday.

In a biyearly survey, 39% of sixth through 12th grade students at APS reported at the end of last semester that they felt confident in areas of social awareness, like listening, communication and getting along with classmates. 

鈥淲e see a lot in our surveys, kids asking, 鈥楬ow do I make a friend?鈥欌�� Salazar said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 this opportunity.鈥�

Albuquerque High senior Natalie Lopez said she signed up to be a mentor to help incoming freshmen not feel as nervous as she was when she started high school.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know anyone, and it was difficult finding my way around and making friends,鈥� Lopez said. 鈥淚 feel like if I can help with that in any way, that would be great.鈥�
