APS keeps early August start for 2027-28 school year
80% of survey respondents preferred early start vs. later in the month
Albuquerque Public Schools will keep an early August start date for the 2027-28 school year after the Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the Wednesday.
Students, families and staff who responded to a February survey overwhelmingly preferred an earlier start date to a later one. Under the newly approved schedule, classes will begin Aug. 6, 2027, for first through 12th grades and end May 25, 2028. Classes for pre-K and kindergarten students begin four days later, on Aug. 10.
Fall break runs from Oct. 8 through Oct. 11, coinciding with Balloon Fiesta and Indigenous Peoples鈥 Day and fall parent-teacher conferences land on the Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving break. Students have two weeks for winter break and a spring break aligned with the vernal holiday on April 14.
The district鈥檚 College and Career High School, which offers dual degree programs with Central New Mexico Community College, will start the 2027-28 on Aug. 16 and conclude it on April 28.
A second option to begin classes on Aug. 19 and end June 8 received less than 20% of more than 18,400 votes. The later option would have ended the first semester in January, meaning fall finals would have been taken after winter break.
Board member Heather Benavidez said Wednesday she was impressed with the number of survey respondents and that she would easily vote to approve the calendar.
鈥淚'm very happy to accept the calendar that the people have asked for,鈥 Benavidez said.
Respondents who preferred the earlier option said they wanted to preserve the traditional academic calendar, while those who preferred the later option said they wanted the district to rethink the school calendar at the fundamental level, according to survey results. Respondents from both groups said the options didn鈥檛 work for families, and that students and staff needed more recovery time.
School officials said they proposed the later start date in part due to recurring 鈥渉eat and humidity concerns鈥 that surface at the beginning of every school year. On the second day of the current school year in August when temperatures reached 101 degrees, APS had nearly 500 work orders to fix cooling systems across its almost 150 campuses.
The current APS school year for first through 12th graders runs from Aug. 7, 2025, until May 28, 2026. Pre-K and kindergarten students began classes a few days later on Aug. 11. The next school year runs from Aug. 7, 2026, until May 27, 2027.
School calendars are approved by the APS board two years in advance.
