New Mexico will hold the nation's fourth Democratic presidential primary in 2028, weeks before Super Tuesday, a Democratic National Committee panel decided Friday.

The calendar approved by the committee sets Feb. 15, 2028, as the date for New Mexico's Democratic primary. New Mexico will be one of six states to hold its primary before Super Tuesday on March 7, 2028.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and other state officials lobbied the DNC this year to give New Mexico a coveted early primary date.

鈥淢aking New Mexico an early primary state will help put our state on the national stage, increase investment in our communities, expand our tourism economy and give New Mexicans a stronger voice in shaping the policies of our nation,鈥� Lujan Grisham said in a statement Friday.

The committee also voted that South Carolina will hold the nation's first Democratic primary on Jan. 22, 2028. The full DNC will have to ratify the calendar in August.

New Mexico's early primary date is intended to give a greater voice to the diverse electorate reflected in New Mexico's large Native American and Hispanic population, members of the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee said.

Another factor is New Mexico's status as a border state, highlighting the Trump administration's immigration policies and stepped-up efforts of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"We simply can't lose on this issue and concede on this issue while ICE is out there in the streets killing Americans," said committee member Andre Treiber of Texas. New Mexico was the only border state to apply for an early primary date on the Democratic primary calendar.

New Mexico's affordability also makes the state more accessible to a broader number of candidates, said Shad Murib, a committee member from Colorado.

"New Mexico is an affordable state to campaign in," Murib told committee members. "That means it's an opportunity for grassroots candidates who may or may not be able to compete in Virginia."

Democrats elevate diverse states

The 49-member committee approved South Carolina as the nation鈥檚 first Democratic primary by 26 votes over 19 for Nevada and four for New Hampshire.

South Carolina鈥檚 selection marks a change from a decades-old tradition of giving Iowa the first-ever Democratic primary. The overhaul is intended to give greater influence to states that reflect the party鈥檚 diverse electorate, including Black, Hispanic and Native American voters.

One committee member noted that New Mexico鈥檚 early primary will increase fourfold the number of Native Americans who have an opportunity to vote ahead of Super Tuesday.

In addition to South Carolina, New Mexico's primary will be preceded by Nevada on Feb. 1, 2028, and New Hampshire on Feb. 8, 2028. The committee also gave Michigan and Virginia primaries ahead of Super Tuesday.

The committee this year chose to increase the number of 鈥渆arly window鈥� state primaries from four to six.

"This calendar will battle test our candidates, ensure our nominee can appeal to broad swaths of the electorate," and reduce the influence of money in the primaries, DNC Chair Ken Martin said after the vote.

Daniel Garcia, a spokesman for the Democratic Party of New Mexico, said the calendar is likely to be approved in August by the full Democratic National Committee.

Lujan Grisham and other state Democratic officials presented to the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee in May to make a pitch for New Mexico to be moved up on the election calendar.

The governor touted the state's diverse electorate and female-majority Legislature 鈥� it's one of only two states with that distinction. She also credited Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver's resistance to the Trump administration's request for identifying information in the state's voter rolls.
