Earthquakes shake northern New Mexico, southern Colorado
New Mexico Tech manager cites 'induced seismicity' from coal bed methane extraction in Raton Basin
For most northern New Mexicans and southern Coloradans, two earthquakes that occurred one after another early Monday morning 30 miles west of Raton may have felt like little more than a gentle juddering while they slept in their beds.
But for Urbi Basu, a seismologist with New Mexico Tech, these 4.2 and 4.0 magnitude earthquakes, which occurred at 3:21 a.m. and 3.31 a.m., respectively, were remarkable due to their underlying cause.
Both quakes, she said, are symptoms of years of industrial operations in the Raton Basin.
鈥淭his is a known induced seismicity region in New Mexico,鈥 Basu said. 鈥淲hat that means is this area, it has coal bed methane extraction and wastewater disposal related to that. Because of these industrial operations, there has been seismicity in this area since the early 2000s.鈥
When they occur naturally, earthquakes are the result of enormous slabs of the Earth鈥檚 crust grinding against each other, releasing energy outward across sometimes vast distances, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
But earthquakes can also happen due to stress caused by wastewater injection and natural gas extraction, both of which have created stress along faults deep underground in Raton for years.
鈥淲hat we call induced seismicity is we are trying to differentiate between areas of natural seismicity and areas where there hasn鈥檛 been a lot of earthquakes in historic times, but suddenly we are seeing a lot more,鈥 Basu said. 鈥淥ne example is the Socorro magma body, where we have seen earthquakes for a long time, and that鈥檚 related to a natural magma body. For the Raton Basin 鈥 suddenly the number of earthquakes has increased considerably, and that is mainly due to drilling operations.鈥
Basu manages New Mexico Tech鈥檚 Seismological Observatory, which takes readings from roughly 25 permanent seismic monitoring stations throughout the state.
In earthquake terminology, magnitude is a measure of the total energy generated by an earthquake, while 鈥渋ntensity鈥 refers to a quake鈥檚 destructiveness.
Although earthquakes below 5.0 are considered 鈥渓ight,鈥 according to the , Basu said Monday morning鈥檚 quakes were strong enough to get a population鈥檚 attention.
鈥淎 3.5 or higher is generally felt by people, not all people, but some people,鈥 she said. 鈥淥ver a 4.0 is where a picture frame might fall down, so that鈥檚 what we call a big one for this area.鈥
Two southern Colorado residents had reported feeling the early morning quakes as of Monday evening, while a smaller 2.9 magnitude earthquake south of Tercio, Colorado, hadn鈥檛 generated any such reports.
Despite being closer to the stronger quakes鈥 origin points, or epicenters, Raton City Manager Neil Segotta said he didn鈥檛 feel a thing.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know about it until I saw something on Facebook this morning,鈥 he said. 鈥淒idn鈥檛 feel it 鈥 slept right through it, and we haven鈥檛 received any phone calls.鈥
But Segotta, a longtime resident of the area, said he鈥檚 felt the earth move under his feet in the past when he was working for Colfax Senior Citizens.
鈥淚 want to say it was close to 10 years ago, about 2016, somewhere in there,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here was just this sudden jolt, and that was it.鈥
Basu said her agency works in tandem with the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, which catalogs earthquakes caused by industry and can set limits based on their frequency.
While the Raton basin can see up to 15 tremors per month, Basu said Monday morning鈥檚 were pushing the upper limits of the magnitudes the basin typically sees.
鈥淢agnitude 4.0 is a big earthquake in terms of an induced earthquake,鈥 she said, 鈥渁nd that gets into rules and regulations of that area.鈥
