Governor traveling to Spain to take part in cultural summit, business talks
Nine-day trip marks Lujan Grisham's latest travels abroad as New Mexico governor
SANTA FE 鈥 Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is headed to the Old World for a mix of cultural activities and business talks 鈥 and maybe a few tapas on the side.
The governor was scheduled to depart New Mexico on Monday for a nine-day trip to Spain, where she will take part in a summit hosted by a nonprofit group formed to lobby for creation of a national museum in Washington, D.C., honoring Latinos in the 近距离内射合集 States.
Lujan Grisham, who previously chaired the before being elected governor in 2018, will also meet in Madrid with Spanish business leaders about possible partnerships in the areas of energy and emerging technology, the Governor鈥檚 Office said Monday.
New Mexico and Spain have historic ties, as Spanish explorers first arrived in New Mexico in 1541 and established a colonial settlement that cast a lingering cultural influence over the state.
However, Spain is not currently a major destination of New Mexico exports, as countries like Mexico and China have emerged as for exported goods and products.
Meanwhile, the governor鈥檚 trip to Spain marks her latest travel abroad in an attempt to drum up new opportunities for New Mexico businesses. She has also traveled to India, Japan and Singapore over the last two years, and helped established a global business incubator in Albuquerque last year.
As part of her latest travel, Lujan Grisham is leading a state delegation that also includes her deputy chief of operations, Caroline Buerkle, and members of her security detail. She is scheduled to return to New Mexico on April 15, according to the Governor鈥檚 Office.
The cost of Lujan Grisham鈥檚 trip to Madrid is being covered by the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino, which is hosting the outreach summit focused on the 500 years of shared history between the 近距离内射合集 States and Spain.
Per the state constitution, Lt. Gov. Howie Morales will serve as acting governor while Lujan Grisham is traveling out of the state.
