Lujan Grisham blasts Trump's record on health care in prime-time DNC speech

SANTA FE 鈥� Far from the political battles of New Mexico, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Tuesday delivered an emphatic backing of Kamala Harris鈥� record on health care while blasting Republicans for trying to restrict abortion access.

In a prime-time speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the governor said GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance would, if elected, seek to repeal the Affordable Care Act and eliminate protections for pre-existing conditions.

鈥淓ither these guys don鈥檛 get it, or they don鈥檛 care,鈥� Lujan Grisham said in her four-minute speech.

She also described access to affordable health care as a personal issue, citing her family鈥檚 struggles with the health issues of her sister, Kimberly, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 2 years old and died at age 21.

The convention speech could raise Lujan Grisham鈥檚 national political profile 鈥� and rekindle speculation about a possible federal Cabinet post 鈥� as she approaches the final two years of her second term as governor.

Back home, the governor has feuded in recent months with top-ranking Democratic lawmakers over how to lower New Mexico鈥檚 violent crime rates. Lawmakers did not address much of the governor鈥檚 agenda during a special legislative session she called last month that ended up only lasting for one day.

But the backyard battles do not appear to have affected Lujan Grisham鈥檚 standing on a national stage.

After President Joe Biden announced last month he was withdrawing from this year鈥檚 presidential race, the governor was among nine candidates asked to undergo vetting as Harris mulled over her running mate.

While Harris ultimately picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her vice presidential nominee, the vetting evidenced ties between Lujan Grisham and the vice president.

Harris officiated Lujan Grisham鈥檚 wedding to Manny Cordova in May 2022, and she traveled to Albuquerque later that year to drum up support for the governor鈥檚 reelection campaign.

During her Tuesday speech at the DNC, Lujan Grisham cited Harris鈥� past efforts as California鈥檚 attorney general to hold drug companies and hospitals accountable for rising prices.

She also touted her own efforts, as a member of Congress, to lower prescription drug costs for Medicare recipients.

The governor sought to contrast those efforts to Trump鈥檚 record on health care issues, as the former president pledged to repeal the landmark 2010 health care law and replace it with a new law.

鈥淵ou know what Donald Trump delivered? Junk plans, higher premiums and abortion bans,鈥� Lujan Grisham said. 鈥淎nd if you don鈥檛 think a second term would be worse, then I鈥檝e got a bunch of Trump Steaks to sell you.鈥�

The governor鈥檚 speech came on the second night of the four-day Democratic National Convention, just after speeches from Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

House Minority Leader Rod Montoya, R-Farmington, said he was surprised Lujan Grisham was selected to speak on the national stage about health care issues, given New Mexico鈥檚 chronic health care provider shortage.

鈥淭he only thing en fuego in New Mexico is our health care system,鈥� Montoya told the Journal, repeating a phrase used by the governor in her convention speech.

He also said the governor had sided with attorneys over medical providers in New Mexico by signing a 2021 law increasing the state鈥檚 medical malpractice caps. Lawmakers passed a follow-up bill in 2023 intended to help independent outpatient clinics remain open.
