A man is accused of gunning down another man by Old Town then hiding the firearm under the hood of a vehicle.

Police did not release the deceased man鈥檚 identity.

Arturo Nanez, 44, of Albuquerque, is charged with an open count of murder, shooting at or from a vehicle and tampering with evidence. He was being booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center, APD spokesperson Rebecca Atkins said in a news release on Sunday night.

Police identified Nanez through video surveillance and automated license plate readers, she said.

Shortly after 1 a.m., officers responded to multiple ShotSpotter activations in the area of Central Avenue and Rio Grande Boulevard, Atkins said. When officers arrived, they found a man with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital where he died, she said.

According to police, license plate readers were used to track down an SUV, which was found at a home in Northwest Albuquerque.

鈥淒uring an interview, Nanez admitted to the shooting and directed detectives to a 9mm firearm he had concealed under the hood of his vehicle to avoid detection,鈥 Atkins said. 鈥淣anez also confessed to leaving his home with the specific intent to shoot someone, citing a hatred for the unhoused community.鈥
