An Albuquerque man is accused of stabbing his neighbor to death after an argument over spilled water.

Michael Cain, 39, is charged with an open count of murder, tampering with evidence and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the killing of 22-year-old Esmeralda Romero. He was arrested and booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on Tuesday.

Officers were dispatched Monday around 1:30 p.m. to the ABQ Encore Apartments at 801 Eubank NE after receiving a call that a woman had been fatally stabbed in her apartment, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.

An apartment employee told police that Cain had come into the office to complain about Romero, saying she had been dumping water on his patio, the complaint states.

The employee said Cain returned sometime later and said he spoke to Romero to try to resolve the situation before he left, according to the complaint.

Romero arrived moments later to speak to the employee and said the water was dripping from a dog bowl on her patio, police said. The employee gave Romero the phone number for apartment security and told her to call 911 if she felt unsafe with Cain.

The employee said she watched Romero walk away when she saw Cain 鈥渃ome running from out in the parking lot and attack (Romero)," the complaint states. The witness said she saw Cain grab Romero from behind before he started punching her.

She told police she realized Cain had stabbed Romero and she rushed to call 911 as he ran, according to the complaint.

Officers obtained video footage that showed Cain walking out of his apartment with a black folder in his left hand, the complaint states. Police said footage showed Cain 鈥渞ush her from behind鈥� with a large knife in his right hand before he struck her several times. 

Police searched the apartment complex and found a bloody knife in the parking lot just south of where Cain ran, according to the complaint.

A short time later, Cain called dispatch and told them to send officers to his location because he 鈥渘eeded to turn himself in,鈥� the complaint states.

He was found in an alleyway near the 10500 block of San Jacinto NE 鈥� roughly five minutes away from the apartment complex 鈥� and he was taken to a hospital after officers noticed he had cuts on his hands.
