GRANTS 鈥� The peak of Mount Taylor looks like something out of a dream, and the view from the top is worth the journey to get there.

Mount Taylor, located roughly 15 miles from Grants, is a dormant volcano and the highest point in the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands, reaching over 11,000 feet at its peak.

Mining sites dot the base of the mountain, and the winding drive up to the top reveals the story of Grants. Coal Mine Campground is named after the industry that makes up a significant portion of the city鈥檚 history.

Michael Mitzner, 43, visited the mountain on June 29 as part of a visit to Grants and the Acoma and Laguna pueblos. A semi-regular hiker, Mitzner recommends bringing hiking boots, pepper spray, binoculars and a large jug of water along for the climb.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e a novice, it鈥檚 not really challenging,鈥� he said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a beautiful lookout that鈥檚 amazing, and the radio towers are up there, too.鈥�

Even people without hiking equipment should be able to make the trip, though it may prove more difficult. My best friend and I took the hike with little equipment, and I even managed to make it through with a pair of Adidas and novice hiking skills, it took more effort to make sure my feet didn鈥檛 slip on rocks.

For those hoping to summit Mount Taylor, a vehicle with four-wheel drive is highly recommended to avoid unnecessary hiking. Regular vehicles can make it close to the top, but there is an additional mile hike through rocky terrain to reach the hiking trails.

High elevation makes the journey feel more physically taxing. Luckily, the mountain offers shady places to rest and enjoy the views on the way to the top.

The Gooseberry Spring Trail is the most popular route up the mountain. Steep steps and thin air can make it take longer, and I would recommend hikers allot 5 to 6 hours to make it to the peak.

You鈥檒l know you鈥檙e making good progress when the light green fields of grass and radio towers grow larger and larger. Shades of green provide a gentle reprieve from the desert views most New Mexicans are accustomed to. You feel as if you are in a different state.

At certain points during the hike, the views stretch from Grants to Farmington and showcase New Mexico at its absolute best.

The chirps of birds, the trees swishing against themselves as a gentle breeze sweeps through, and the buzzing of cicadas give Mount Taylor even more personality. It鈥檚 worth taking a silent break to absorb all the sounds the mountain makes.

The summit offers views in all directions, which make every grueling moment of the hike worth it.

Mitzner traveled up the mountain to enjoy some peace and scenery as he worked on his creative writing. He said he came to New Mexico to enjoy the desert landscapes and to be in the mountains.
