Police investigating whose bullets injured second man and, separately, a bystander a block away

Police shot and killed an armed man when an altercation erupted in gunfire just before midnight Friday in Downtown Albuquerque, leaving two others hospitalized.

In an email, Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said police are investigating whether it was the officers鈥 gunfire that injured a second man involved in the altercation and a bystander who was struck a block away by a stray bullet.

He identified the man who was confirmed to have been shot by police as 41-year-old Stephen Griego, who died at a hospital. Gallegos said police found a gun at the scene and 鈥淕riego had it in his hand at the time of the shooting.鈥

鈥淒etectives are still determining who fired which rounds and the sequence,鈥 he said.

The other two people struck by gunfire are in the hospital with injuries 鈥渘ot considered life-threatening.鈥

Gallegos said four officers 鈥渇ired several times at Griego.鈥 No officers were injured.

Two videos shared to social media Saturday appeared to show the initial shooting unfold.

In the videos, a man in a white shirt approaches a man on a scooter and slaps him. The man on the scooter appears to pull out a gun and fire before being tackled. In both videos, those behind the camera run as at least a dozen more gunshots are heard in rapid succession.

In a briefing early Saturday morning, APD Chief Cecily Barker described the scene as 鈥渧ery chaotic.鈥 She said other people reported being injured in the area, "but we are trying to confirm at this time if it is related and what those injuries are.鈥

In the email Saturday afternoon, Gallegos said witnesses told police that Griego was involved in a confrontation with another man near Central and Third.

He said several officers were 鈥渋n the busy area of Downtown when they heard a gunshot鈥 around 11:50 p.m. Gallegos said officers 鈥渞an toward the gunfire鈥 and four of them shot at Griego.

鈥淭he man in the altercation with Griego was shot one time. Investigators are working to confirm who shot the man, including whether Griego shot him during the altercation,鈥 he said. 鈥淎 third man was shot, possibly struck by a stray bullet about a block away from the shooting. Investigators are also working to determine who fired the shot that struck the bystander.鈥

The officers who fired their weapons are on paid leave and the shooting is being investigated by the Multi-Agency Task Force, while APD鈥檚 Internal Affairs Force Division will investigate if policies were followed.

鈥淒etectives will interview any new witnesses that come forward and complete any forensic tests,鈥 Gallegos said.

APD is asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call 242-COPS.
