Police arrested an Oklahoma man at a Santa Fe motel Tuesday morning, alleging he fired shots at officers from inside his room and refused to surrender for several hours until SWAT operators intervened.

Reese Michael Jenson, 21, of Inola, Oklahoma, was booked at the Santa Fe County Detention Center on two counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer, criminal damage to property in excess of $1,000 and negligent use of a deadly weapon.

Two Santa Fe Police officers responded just before midnight Monday to reports of shots fired from the second story of the Motel 6 at 3007 Cerrillos Road, about one block northeast of Meow Wolf.

Officers retrieved a master key from motel staff and found several bullet holes in Jenson鈥檚 room door, but said they received no response after knocking and identifying themselves as law enforcement.

They attempted to use the master key, but 鈥渢he door remained locked and unable to open,鈥� according to a news release from Santa Fe Police.

When the officers attempted to force the door open, Jenson allegedly shot in their direction but did not strike the officers, who did not return fire.

After containing the scene and evacuating nearby rooms, additional officers arrived and assisted in making announcements over the department鈥檚 public address system, asking Jenson to surrender peacefully. Officers also obtained a phone number for Jenson, who answered but refused to come out and 鈥渢old officers to leave him alone.鈥�

The department dispatched its SWAT, Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Crisis Negotiations teams to the motel. After several hours of unsuccessful negotiations, an officer kicked in Jenson鈥檚 door and took him into custody following a brief physical altercation after the 21-year-old exited onto the second-story balcony.

Officers said they recovered a handgun from Jenson before placing him under arrest.
