One of the largest and highest performing charter schools in New Mexico is selling one of its campuses as it eyes an expansion.

The almost 37,900-square-foot building housing K-5 students at Explore Academy is listed for sale at $10.95 million, a Commercial Association of Realtors New Mexico listing shows. , posted by Albuquerque-based real estate agency NAI SunVista, says the building is available at the beginning of June 2026.

Dave Hill, the property鈥檚 listing agent, said the property has been listed as a result of Explore Academy鈥檚 plans to expand.

Jacob Kolander, head administrator of the school鈥檚 Albuquerque campuses, confirmed the charter school鈥檚 hopes to expand but said 鈥渘othing has been finalized.鈥�

鈥淲e will share details when and if the time is right,鈥� he wrote in a text to the Journal.

Explore has around 1,300 students at its Albuquerque campuses and is ranked as one of the top-performing schools in the state of New Mexico, earning a 鈥渟potlight鈥� designation from the Public Education Department.

In addition to the Journal Center elementary campus, Explore operates a middle and high school campus at 6600 Gulton NE, near the Midway business park. Established in 2014, Explore also has campuses in Rio Rancho as well as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Peoria, Arizona.

Explore鈥檚 Journal Center campus 鈥� featuring 26 classrooms, 12 offices, five labs, a conference room and a nurse鈥檚 office 鈥� was listed in early September, Hill said. He and co-listing agent DJ Brigman are marketing the property to 鈥渁ll users,鈥� though the ideal buyer is another elementary charter school, he said.

鈥淥ur target market is an elementary school, but there are other uses,鈥� Hill wrote in an email. 鈥淚t could be (a) daycare or converted for mid-high or high school use. In addition, it could be converted back into great office space.鈥�

Hill said charter schools are not listed for sale very often, making the property鈥檚 availability a rarity.

鈥淭ypically, charter schools must purchase existing office, retail or even industrial buildings and convert them into charter schools,鈥� Hill said. 鈥淭his is a unique opportunity, because it has already been converted. 鈥� It is a built-out, ready-to-go elementary school. That is hard to find.鈥�

Hill said the property鈥檚 location in the middle of the Journal Center is also a plus. He added that the facility has been expanded in recent years, offering additional classrooms, an outdoor playground and plentiful parking.

Hill and Brigman have shown the property several times and are currently in negotiations with another school, though Hill declined to share which or what kind.
