A hands-on lesson in mudding helps maintain a traditional adobe oven at the Coronado Historic Site

BERNALILLO 鈥� Senior Interpretive Ranger Anthony Magdalena of Jemez Pueblo spent Wednesday adding an adobe layer to the horno at Coronado Historic Site in Bernalillo. The site offered volunteers the opportunity to learn about adobe and mudding, although only three people showed up to help briefly.

Nonetheless, the dome-like, outdoor adobe oven must be maintained, with or without volunteers.

The horno is a traditional tool for cooking and baking. Magdalena noted that similar cooking practices evolved around the world among cultures that never met. He has re-mudded the horno at Coronado Historic Site for 15 to 16 years, and on his pueblo for 30 years or more.

This horno is used for programs and events at the park throughout the season. The site plans to use it for a Pumpkins and Pastimes event during the Balloon Fiesta in October.
