Annual event at Bataan Memorial Building marks surrender to Japan

SANTA FE 鈥 More than 150 people 鈥 many of them from the New Mexico Army National Guard 鈥 came together in Santa Fe on Thursday to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the Fall of Bataan. The annual event, held outside the Bataan Memorial Building, marks the day U.S. and Philippine troops were ordered to surrender to the Empire of Japan during World War II.

Freshly ironed uniforms dotted the crowd while veterans in attendance wore aged caps and patches from a long-ago war. One of them, 82-year-old James Moss, who served alongside his brothers in the Vietnam War, stood at attention during the playing of the national anthem.

Speakers included Santa Fe Mayor Michael Garcia; Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Carper, deputy adjutant general for the state National Guard; and state Veterans Services Secretary Jamison Herrera. A special remembrance was given to Valdemar DeHerrera, New Mexico's last living survivor of Bataan, who died last year, and the event concluded as guardsmen lowered the white flag of surrender.
