Road work to start by La Luz Trailhead; construction expected to take about a month
La Luz Trail hikers may need to find another place to enjoy the peaceful trek across the Sandia Mountains over the next few weeks.
The U.S. Forest Service announced this month that it will close the La Luz Trailhead parking area and Forest Road 333A due to road construction. Along with the closures, access to the trail will be limited.
The changes will take effect Monday, Aug. 11, and last until Sept. 10, according to a news release.
鈥淭he road improvements are certainly needed and it (is) probably a good time of year to get them completed,鈥 New Mexico Mountain Club President Brian Anderson said in an email.
Some of the work will consist of pothole repairs, crack sealing and restriping along Forest Road 333 and 333A and in the trailhead parking area.
Due to the construction, the parking area will be closed and there will be single-lane closures. Also, the trailhead will be closed 鈥渁t times,鈥 the release states.
The U.S. Forest Service recommended that hikers take:
- The La Cueva Trailhead to access La Luz Trail. This will add a half-mile each way.
- Go on the Embudito Trail: 鈥淭his trail provides plenty of views of the Albuquerque area and will take you to South Sandia Peak as well as the South Crest Trail,鈥 according to the Forest Service.
- Explore Three Gun Spring: This trail offers a gradual ascent to Oso Pass, with a scenic view of the Manzano Mountains.
