Sandia Peak Tramway open amid forest closures
Parts of Cibola National Forest will close through January for a hazard tree and wildfire fuel reduction project, but the tramway and Ten 3 restaurant remain open.
The Sandia Peak Tramway and Ten 3 restaurant will remain fully operational despite closures in the Cibola National Forest.
Portions of the Cibola National Forest, including the Ellis Trailhead, Sandia Crest Recreation Site and N.M. 536 beyond the 10K Trailhead parking lot, will be closed for the Sandia Crest "Switchback" Hazard Tree and Fuel Reduction Project.
The U.S. Forest Service said the project "is an effort to protect health and human safety and reduce critical infrastructure at risk to catastrophic wildfire."
The project will thin 140 acres of forest, removing dead trees and other potential wildfire fuel to reduce fire risk and eliminate hazards to visitors and staff. The closures are scheduled to remain in effect through Jan. 15, unless rescinded earlier.
The Sandia Peak Tramway and Ten 3 will maintain their regular hours. The tram operates daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Ten 3 is open Wednesday through Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
