A daylong standoff Tuesday between law enforcement and an armed man at a Northwest Albuquerque apartment ended when police fatally shot him.

The situation began around 2:30 a.m. after dispatchers received a call from a man who 鈥�believed there were homeless individuals trying to gain entry into his home,鈥� Albuquerque Police Chief Cecily Barker said in a briefing at the scene late Tuesday.

Officers were dispatched to the Odyssey Apartments, 10600 Cibola Loop NW, and confirmed no intruder was inside before leaving the property, she said. 

The man called again and said people were attempting to tamper with his locks, Barker said. Police were sent again and gave the man a referral for a crisis prevention unit.

Around 11 a.m., dispatchers received multiple calls from people stating that shots had been fired at the apartment complex and 911 operators could hear shots in the background of the call, according to Barker.

The man fired at least 70 round throughout the day, she said.

The Albuquerque Police Department鈥檚 SWAT team was activated, and crisis negotiators were attempting to convince the man 鈥� who was not identified Tuesday evening 鈥� to surrender.

鈥淎round 7:15 this evening, we know that shots were fired as our special operations officers could hear rounds going over their heads," Barker said. 鈥淗e did come out onto the balcony with a ballistic vest on and armed with a rifle.鈥�

The man may also have been armed with a handgun, she said.

Two officers shot and killed him. Barker did not say how many rounds police fired.

Residents of the apartment complex could be seen parked outside, with several saying they had been waiting for hours for the scene to be cleared.

Barker confirmed that a water pipe had been damaged and some apartments had been flooded.

One resident, who lived below the apartment where the shooting occurred, said the complex was quiet until she heard dozens of gunshots.

At some point, she noticed areas in her apartment began to flood and had video that showed parts of her apartment filled with water, completely soaking the carpet in her bedroom and closet.

Another resident, who said she lived near the man, showed the Journal video of the confrontation. SWAT could be seen negotiating with the man and a large police vehicle was parked outside the apartment.

Cibola High School, across the street from the complex, was not evacuated or placed under a shelter-in-place order.

The woman said a nearby school bus attempted to drop students off before leaving. She said parents were notified that they would have to pick their children up from school.
