New Mexico Democrats rallied around President Joe Biden on Friday following his unsteady performance in a debate with former President Donald Trump.

Members of the state鈥檚 all-Democratic congressional delegation skirted questions about whether Biden should step aside or be replaced as the party鈥檚 presidential nominee.

鈥淭here鈥檚 no sugarcoating it 鈥� the President himself acknowledged it wasn鈥檛 a strong performance,鈥� U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich said of Biden鈥檚 showing Thursday evening.

鈥淏ut one bad debate doesn鈥檛 change the stakes of this election,鈥� Heinrich said in a written statement. 鈥淒onald Trump is a threat to our fundamental rights and freedoms, and our democracy itself. We have to defeat him in November.鈥�

Heinrich鈥檚 remarks were similar to those of other Democratic lawmakers who acknowledged Biden鈥檚 poor showing and tried to shut down talk of replacing him at the top of the Democratic ticket. Democrats also tried to shift the focus to Trump鈥檚 attacks and falsehoods.

鈥淚 stand with our President,鈥� U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury said in an email to the Journal. 鈥淛oe Biden is a fighter 鈥� when he gets knocked down, he gets back up.鈥�

Stansbury described Trump as 鈥渁 liar and a con man who spent the night lying to the American people鈥� about Social Security and Medicare, his treatment of veterans, the economy, inflation and the deficit.

鈥淎nd, he lied about his own criminal record and direct role in the insurrection on January 6th,鈥� Stansbury said. 鈥淒onald Trump is unfit to serve. 鈥�

Biden himself acknowledged criticism of his debate performance at a rally Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 debate as well as I used to,鈥� Biden told supporters, but added, 鈥淚 know how to do this job. I know how to get things done.鈥�

Sen. Ben Ray Luj谩n said Friday he remains committed to reelecting Biden 鈥渁nd Democrats up and down the ballot. The stakes are too high.鈥�

鈥淟ast night鈥檚 debate showed Donald Trump is still the same failed president he was four years ago,鈥� Luj谩n said. 鈥淚t served as another reminder that he鈥檚 all bluster and all lies. The American people rejected him once before 鈥� whether he accepts it or not 鈥� and will do it again.鈥�

The Republican Party of New Mexico issued a statement Thursday after the debate applauding Trump鈥檚 emphasis on crimes committed by 鈥渃riminals who have taken advantage of our open border.鈥�

鈥淭onight, Biden didn鈥檛 offer any solutions but blamed everyone and everything except the real reason why prices are up: his expensive regulations and massive government spending,鈥� said Leticia Mu帽oz, executive director of the state GOP.

U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fern谩ndez avoided any discussion about Biden鈥檚 performance and took aim at Trump鈥檚 record on abortion.

鈥淟ast night, I watched former President and convicted felon Trump spew 90 minutes of lies that are hurting New Mexicans,鈥� Leger Fern谩ndez said in an email.

鈥淏ecause his extremist Justices overturned Roe v. Wade, New Mexico has seen thousands of women from Texas and other states come to New Mexico for reproductive health care,鈥� she said. 鈥淗e is putting pregnant women鈥檚 lives in danger and must never be President again.鈥�
