State Police investigate fatal deputy-involved shooting of Chimay贸 man
Probe to determine what prompted Rio Arriba law enforcement officers to fire after responding to domestic violence incident
New Mexico State Police are looking into what prompted Rio Arriba County Sheriff鈥檚 deputies to shoot and kill a Chimay贸 man Thursday evening while responding to a report of domestic violence at a local residence.
Investigators on Friday identified the man killed as 60-year-old Derek Torres, whom a female had accused in a 911 call of threatening to kill her and himself. She said Torres was intoxicated, had physically assaulted her, was chasing her with a knife and planned to kill himself when deputies arrived.
Deputies encountered Torres after arriving at the residence around 7 p.m. and shot him 鈥渇or reasons still under investigation,鈥� according to state police.
鈥淣ew Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews,鈥� a statement from the agency reads.
An initial review of the incident indicated Torres then retreated into the residence, barricaded himself inside and did not respond to deputies鈥� verbal commands to surrender.
Deputies found Torres inside the home, rendered him medical aid and had him transported to a local hospital, where he died.
State police did not identify the deputies who fired the shots and deferred to the Rio Arriba County Sheriff鈥檚 Office for further information.
