Fire crews are battling a tank battery fire near the town of Jal in Lea County.

According to a news release posted by Lea County, the blaze sparked near Frying Pan Road and Anthony Road. At least seven agencies are responding.

The fire sparked around 9:45 a.m. and is 0% contained, according to fire and emergency medical services chief Whitney Moody.

A tank battery is a group of large oilfield tanks and other equipment that separates and stores the fluids 鈥 primarily oil, gas and water 鈥 that are extracted from an oil well.

Videos posted to social media show large plumes of black smoke billowing into the air. Lea County officials advised residents to avoid the area and give emergency responders room to work.

An evacuation zone surrounding the fire is in effect, the release states. No residences are within the evacuation zone.
