Rio Grande comes back; enjoy it while you can

A planned release briefly revives dry stretches of the river as researchers study drought鈥檚 toll on the bosque

I鈥檝e been waiting four months to see water flowing in the Rio Grande.

Since coming to Albuquerque from Atlanta in April, I鈥檝e seen little more than a trickle 鈥 a reminder of the water woes facing New Mexico.

Then Thursday, it happened: Water started flowing through portions of the river that recently have been dry or nearly dry.

It probably won鈥檛 last through the weekend.

Regardless, the sight was fascinating to someone new to Albuquerque but hardly new to the realities of the desert.

After living 20 years in Arizona earlier in my career, I thought I understood what it looks like when water is scarce. But the Rio Grande is different. There鈥檚 something particularly striking about seeing a river that has shaped a city and its landscape reduced to disconnected pools 鈥 and then watching water suddenly move through it again.

Without much to show for the monsoon season along the Rio Grande Valley, I was taken aback. But as I soon learned, the change wasn鈥檛 the result of the drought suddenly ending or increased runoff.

It was the result of a planned release of stored water.

On Monday, water managers released approximately 2,000 acre-feet of water from Abiquiu Reservoir. That鈥檚 more than 650 million gallons. The water is part of the San Juan-Chama system and was released as a kind of simulated river or rain event, providing environmental flows while allowing scientists and water managers to study what happens when water returns after prolonged drying.

Six hundred fifty million gallons sounds abstract until you stand beside a riverbed that had been dry and watch water spread across it again.

The timing is significant because 2026 has been an extraordinarily dry year for the Albuquerque area and the Rio Grande. Much of the area has moved from extreme to exceptional drought, the most severe category on the U.S. Drought Monitor. Long stretches of the river have stopped flowing, with some areas experiencing roughly 90 days of dry riverbed.

This release is different from watching the river respond to a normal rainfall event. Water managers are deliberately putting water back into the river channel.

And this time, they鈥檙e watching closely.

The release provides an opportunity to learn how quickly the water moves through the riverbed, how much disappears into the surrounding soil, how it interacts with groundwater, and what happens to the bosque and wildlife that depend on it.

That research has taken on greater urgency this year.

Audubon Southwest has reported a substantial dieback of the bosque, particularly among cottonwoods. Paul Tashjian, the organization鈥檚 director of Freshwater Conservation, told the Journal the extent of the dieback took them by surprise.

With the riverbed dry for roughly 90 days in 2026, he called this year 鈥渂y far the worst.鈥

The water release may improve the odds for some trees that are on the edge, even as researchers acknowledge that some trees will be lost.

So this isn鈥檛 simply an experiment in hydrology. It鈥檚 also an attempt to understand whether a temporary return of water can help an ecosystem under extraordinary stress.

Having lived in the Southwest previously, I鈥檓 accustomed to the idea that water determines what survives. But watching this river disappear and then return, even briefly, makes that lesson feel less theoretical.

It鈥檚 important to understand that this does not mean the Rio Grande is returning to normal. The water being seen now is temporary supplemental water 鈥 a carefully managed, one-time release during an extraordinarily dry year, not evidence that the drought has ended.

Managed releases into the Rio Grande occur in other years, too, for reasons that can include irrigation, endangered-species protection, water-delivery requirements or other management needs. Their size and timing change from year to year.

What makes this week鈥檚 event especially noticeable is the contrast. When a riverbed has been dry, even a relatively short release can create a dramatic visual change. A channel that looked empty can suddenly contain moving water, giving the impression that the river has 鈥渃ome back鈥 almost overnight.

Maybe that鈥檚 the most deceptive thing about what I saw. For a few days, the Rio Grande looks more like the river I expected to find when I moved here. But the water is temporary, and the conditions that made it necessary have not gone away.

For Albuquerque, the event is a reminder of how dependent the Rio Grande is on careful water management. The Rio Grande is a natural river whose flow through much of New Mexico is heavily shaped by dams, diversions and deliberate water management.

Albuquerque鈥檚 drinking-water supply is in a stronger position than that of some other parts of New Mexico, thanks in part to its substantial aquifer. But that doesn鈥檛 change the reality visible in the river channel.

The water in the Rio Grande is real.

Unfortunately, so is the underlying shortage.
